Job summary

Damen Shipyards in Gorinchem is seeking a motivated Data Science student to join the Smart Maintenance initiative. You will contribute to an anomaly detection pipeline for vessel equipment, focusing on data selection, health indicators, and detection reliability.

You will choose a research topic with the team—ranging from explainability to deployment—and potentially publish results. Mentoring, travel allowance, and academic supervision are provided in this Dutch internship.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a Bachelor or Master in Data Science, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, or related field.
• Ideally combines data science with mechanical/electrical background and sensor interpretation.
• Experience with statistics, Python, and ML or time-series analysis preferred.
• Interest in predictive maintenance and real-world, messy data.
• Fluency in English.

Responsibilities

• Support the development and improvement of ML-based anomaly detection models for vessel equipment.
• Preprocess and analyze sensor/time-series data from onboard systems.
• Run experiments in Python, evaluating model performance against real or simulated data.
• Collaborate with Data Scientists, maintenance engineers, and vessel operations stakeholders.
• Document results and present findings to the team.
