Job description

Internship in Nanomaterials
About Seaborough

Seaborough is a nanoscience and nanotechnology company focused on the untapped potential of luminescent nanomaterials. We turn bold scientific ideas into breakthrough applications through R&D, commercialization, and licensing, moving from nanoscale chemistry to product-ready materials in a tight loop with our industry and academic partners.

Seaborough has a diverse team and operates with a startup mentality, where we value creativity, agility, and a collaborative spirit. We offer a creative and supportive work environment where your ideas are valued, and your contributions can make a real impact.

Seaborough is located in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, a city recognized to be one of Europe’s hotspots when it comes to a fruitful start-up business environment. Seaborough started in 2013 and is backed by the Dutch private equity firm Momentum Global Ventures, which focuses on clean-tech companies that have the potential to challenge the existing status quo and set the new standard in their respective business areas.

The project

In our research and product engineering teams we develop new luminescent materials (phosphors) for various applications, e.g. LED lighting, greenhouses, and security inks. Conventionally, these materials have particle sizes in the micron size range. However, to integrate these materials in the intended applications it is required to downsize the particles towards the nanoscale. This requires a different type of chemistry and thus new challenges and optimization strategies. We have developed a range of different high quality nanophosphors, which require further optimization and transfer of the synthesis methods to a continuous flow system. We also have more challenging projects available, which require the exploration of completely new synthesis approaches, new material syntheses and detailed (optical) study of the interaction between nanoparticles and/or their scattering behaviour.

In general, depending on the prior knowledge, skills and preferences of the candidate, the project can (and will) revolve in different measures around the synthesis of inorganic luminescent nanomaterials and analysis using fluorescence spectroscopy, and involves further characterization using for example (but not limited to) X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy and nitrogen physisorption.

Where you will work

The research and product engineering teams at Seaborough consist of (young) researchers and technicians with a chemistry and/or physics background. As an internship student, you will be considered a full member of the team, taking part in all group meetings (including presenting your results) and team-building activities.

What you bring

We are currently looking for motivated Master’s students with a background in chemistry, chemical engineering or physics, that aligns with our ongoing research. Because our projects require particular technical skills and relevant experience, the selection process will be based on how well applicants’ profiles match the needs of the available projects. Students with strong, demonstrated competence in the required areas—especially those with expertise in lanthanides, nanoparticle synthesis, and/or rare-earth optical spectroscopy—are particularly encouraged to apply.

What you will do

As an intern, you will be invloved in the synthesis and characterization of luminescent nanoparticles, immersing yourself in inorganic nanomaterials research and their analysis using techniques such as:

  • X-ray diffraction
  • Electron microscopy
  • Nitrogen physisorption
  • Optical spectroscopy
