AMOLF in Amsterdam is offering a research internship focused on time-modulated light fields and nanomechanical resonators. Candidates must be enrolled in a Master's program in physics or related fields, with a requirement to work at least five months. AMOLF is committed to diversity and encourages all qualified candidates to apply.
By joining AMOLF, you can explore groundbreaking research opportunities while being part of a supportive and inclusive environment.
Time‑modulated light fields can couple different mechanical vibration modes, effectively creating networks of nanomechanical resonators. Such optical‑spring couplings can induce intriguing physical behavior, as they break space‑time symmetries that normal mass‑spring networks obey. In this project, you will seek to connect resonators in remote on‑chip nanocavities, mediated by light in a waveguide. You will simulate optimal designs, fabricate nanodevices in the cleanroom, and study their optomechanical behavior in experiments. This remote optical coupling will unlock a scalable architecture to study the functional performance of programmable optomechanical networks.
You are currently enrolled in a Master’s program in physics, chemistry, materials science, or a related field. You have a nationality of an EU member state and/or you are a student at a university in the Netherlands. The internship has to be a mandatory part of your curriculum. We expect you to be available for at least five months, although longer is preferable.
AMOLF is a part of NWO‑I and performs leading fundamental research on the physics of complex forms of matter, and to create new functional materials, in partnership with academia and industry. The institute is located at Amsterdam Science Park and currently employs about 140 researchers and 80 support employees.
AMOLF is highly committed to an inclusive and diverse work environment. We recruit and select on the basis of competencies and talents. We strongly encourage anyone with the right qualifications to apply for the vacancy, regardless of age, gender, origin, sexual orientation or physical ability. AMOLF has won the NNV Diversity Award 2022 for demonstrating the most successful implementation of equality, diversity and inclusion.
