Job summary

Caely Renewables in Amsterdam seeks a Head of Risk to design and lead the end-to-end risk management framework for trading activities across renewables certificates and other commodity-linked instruments.

You will drive risk analytics, stress testing, VaR analysis, and limit setting while collaborating with trading, quant, and technology teams to enable scalable, profitable trading in volatile energy markets.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Finance, Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, Energy Management, or a related field
  • Experience with VaR analysis
  • 5–10 years of commodity or renewable energy trading experience, with exposure to European wholesale energy markets
  • Demonstrated leadership in fast-paced environments
  • Fluency in English; other European languages a plus

Job description

The Candidate

As Head of Risk you will be responsible for designing and overseeing the firm’s risk management framework across market, credit, liquidity, and operational risk. Ensures trading activity stays within defined risk appetite while supporting profitable growth.
Requires strong expertise in financial markets and risk modelling, with judgment and the ability to make high-stakes decisions in fast-paced environments. Works closely with trading, quant, and technology teams.
Leads risk limit setting, real-time exposure monitoring, system and control enhancements, and regulatory compliance. Drives improvements in risk analytics, stress testing, and scenario analysis to support firm-wide decision-making.
Conducted trade book analysis and risk monitoring, including position risk, counterparty risk, and VaR assessment. Managed counterparty and position limits, ensuring adherence to risk frameworks. Partnered closely with trading and research teams to support investment decisions and enhance risk management processes.

The Role

As Head of Risk, you will be responsible for building and leading the group end-to-end risk management framework across trading activities.
Your primary objective is to ensure the company operates within defined risk appetite while enabling efficient, scalable, and profitable trading in volatile markets. This includes managing exposure across renewables certificates and other commodity-linked instruments.
The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in market and commodity risk, strong quantitative and analytical skills, and the judgment to make high-impact decisions in fast-moving trading environments. You should be comfortable collaborating closely with traders, analysts, and senior leadership.
You will play a key leadership role in designing and enforcing risk limits, monitoring real-time exposures, and enhancing risk measurement systems.
A core part of the role will also involve continuous improvement of risk infrastructure and controls, ensuring alignment with regulatory expectations and best practices in energy trading risk management.

The Requirements
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Finance, Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, Energy Management, or a related field
  • Experience with VaR analysis
  • 5–10 years of demonstrated experience in commodity, power, or renewable energy trading, with a strong preference for exposure to European wholesale energy and electricity markets
  • Demonstrated leadership experience managing trading teams in a fast-paced and performance-driven environment
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build strong internal and external relationships
  • Strong decision-making abilities and the confidence to operate effectively under pressure and in volatile market conditions
  • Fluency in English; additional European languages are considered a plus
