Job description

From complex energy systems to intuitive digital experiences.

About Covolt

Covolt is a fast-growing, technology-driven player in the energy market, operating at the intersection of energy, data, technology, and real-time decision-making.

We develop and operate a platform that controls a fleet of 800+ solar and battery assets and uses their flexibility to deliver balancing services (aFRR) to TenneT and Elia.

Behind this platform sits an impressive amount of technology: edge devices in the field, real-time data streams, optimization algorithms, energy market integrations, and automated control systems.

Our customer platforms bring all of this together. They translate complex energy data into actionable insights for our customers, channel partners, and internal operations teams.

We are looking for a Frontend Developer who will take ownership of the technical development of these applications and help shape the next generation of Covolt's digital platforms.

About the Role

You build the interface. The platform brings energy to life.

As a Frontend Developer at Covolt, you work at the intersection of frontend engineering, data visualization, and energy technology.

You develop the applications through which customers and internal teams interact with our energy platform. From customer and partner portals to operational dashboards, you translate complex data and UX designs into fast, reliable, and intuitive user experiences.

This is explicitly not a role where you simply turn designs into individual screens. You build scalable applications based on a shared design system, establish reusable frontend patterns, and ensure that our platforms remain consistent as they grow.

You will become the technical owner of the frontend across our applications, working closely with UX/Product Design and the wider development team.

A major part of this challenge is making our design system ready for AI-assisted development. We want to build a component architecture that is not only easy for developers to use, but also understandable and usable by AI coding tools such as Claude Code and GitHub Copilot.

The key question is not just

"How do we build this screen?", but above all:

"How do we build a frontend foundation that allows us to develop better applications, faster and more consistently?"

What does your job actually entail?

You're building the digital experience behind our energy platform.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Developing and extending Covolt's customer-facing applications, partner portals, and internal operations tooling using React and TypeScript.
  • Translating UX designs, user flows, and prototypes into production-ready frontend applications.
  • Building and maintaining reusable components, frontend patterns, and a shared design system.
  • Preparing the design system for AI-assisted development by structuring components, design tokens, and documentation in a way that AI coding tools can understand and use.
  • Developing interactive dashboards and data visualizations for energy flows, battery State of Charge (SoC), curtailment, revenues, alarms, and asset performance.
  • Working with large volumes of real-time and time-series data, ensuring that information remains clear, responsive, and accessible.
  • Optimizing frontend performance, rendering efficiency, and state management across applications with hundreds of assets and thousands of data points.
  • Integrating frontend applications with REST APIs and backend services.
  • Collaborating with UX/Product Design from the earliest stages of development, providing technical feedback on feasibility, performance, and implementation.
  • Working with the backend and data teams to improve API integrations and, where needed, implement smaller changes or extensions in Python/Django/DRF.
  • Maintaining frontend architecture, code quality, testing, and documentation.
  • Participating in code reviews, technical discussions, and continuous improvement of our development processes.
  • Exploring how AI-assisted development can accelerate implementation without compromising code quality or consistency.

You are therefore not just building interfaces that display information, but applications that make complex energy systems understandable and usable.

How frontend and UX work together

At Covolt, UX is its own discipline.

User research, discovery, validation, user flows, and visual designs are owned by UX/Product Design. Your responsibility is to translate those designs into high-quality technical implementations.

That doesn't mean working in isolation until a design is handed over. You are involved from the start, contribute technical insights, and help ensure that the intended user experience can be delivered in a scalable and maintainable way.

In practice:

  • You work closely with UX to translate designs and flows into reusable frontend components.
  • You identify technical limitations and performance considerations early, rather than solving them after implementation.
  • Feedback from Operations and Customer Success is brought into the UX process. You help identify technical implications and opportunities for improvement.
  • You have an eye for UI and usability. When something can be improved, you raise it with UX rather than independently changing the design.
  • You help maintain consistency across applications by building on the shared design system.

Your focus is building. UX owns the design, and together you make sure the result works as intended.

This challenge is a match if you have the following qualities

You are a technically strong frontend developer who enjoys building applications that combine complex data, functionality, and usability.

You understand that good frontend development is about more than making something look right. It is about building applications that remain fast, maintainable, and reliable as the underlying platform grows.

You enjoy working with component architectures and design systems, have a strong understanding of modern frontend development, and are interested in how AI can change the way software is built.

You can independently translate a design or technical requirement into a working solution, make well-founded implementation choices, and collaborate effectively with UX, backend developers, and other stakeholders.

In addition, you have:

Must-have
  • Proven experience developing production applications with React and TypeScript.
  • A strong understanding of component architecture, state management, rendering performance, and frontend best practices.
  • Experience working with design systems, reusable components, and established frontend patterns.
  • Experience translating Figma designs and UX flows into accurate, production-ready applications.
  • A good understanding of UI, usability, and the importance of consistency across applications.
  • Experience integrating REST APIs and working with JSON data.
  • Affinity with backend development and the willingness to make smaller changes in Python/Django/DRF.
  • Basic knowledge of SQL and relational data models.
  • Experience with Git, code reviews, automated testing, and CI/CD.
  • An independent and proactive mindset. You can turn an ambiguous request into a concrete technical proposal and deliver it.
  • Good communication skills in both Dutch and English.
Nice-to-have

Each of these strengthens your application, but none is a requirement:

  • Experience building or maintaining design systems for AI-assisted development.
  • Experience using AI coding tools such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or similar tools.
  • Experience with data visualization at scale, preferably using ECharts.
  • Experience working with real-time data, WebSockets, streaming, or polling strategies.
  • Affinity with the energy sector, particularly electricity markets, batteries, solar energy, EMS, or SCADA.
  • Experience with Python, Django, or Django REST Framework.
  • Experience with Azure, cloud platforms, and modern deployment environments.
  • An understanding of accessibility and responsive application design, particularly for tablet and mobile use.

You will work within an existing frontend architecture with deliberate technology choices.

Frontend
  • React + TypeScript (PWA)
  • Tailwind CSS
  • Zustand for state management
  • Storybook for component development and documentation
  • Modern build tooling and CI/CD via Azure
Backend and Data
  • Python, Django, and Django REST Framework
  • Azure Functions and REST APIs
  • PostgreSQL and time-series databases
Platform and Infrastructure
  • Containers and Infrastructure-as-Code
  • Grafana, Loki, and Prometheus for observability

You don't need to know everything from day one. React and TypeScript are where you need to be able to deliver. The backend, data infrastructure, and energy domain are areas you can develop further with us.

This is not a greenfield project. There is an existing architecture and an established platform to build on, improve, and scale.

Two levels, one vacancy

We will fill this position at the level that best fits the candidate.

Medior Frontend Developer (approximately 3-6 years of experience)

You independently develop features from UX design to production-ready applications within the existing architecture and design system.

You understand React and TypeScript well, can make sound implementation choices, and know when to ask for feedback or technical review.

You work closely with UX and other developers, contribute to improving reusable components, and are comfortable making smaller API changes with the backend team as a safety net.

You are ready to take ownership of features and gradually expand your technical responsibilities.

Senior Frontend Developer (approximately 6+ years of experience)

You take ownership of the frontend architecture and the technical direction of our customer platforms.

You establish frontend patterns, maintain the design system, and make well-founded architectural and technology decisions, documenting these where appropriate through ADRs.

You lead the technical development of our AI-ready design system, ensure that our applications remain scalable and maintainable, and help other developers grow through code reviews, pairing, and technical guidance.

You are the primary technical point of contact for the frontend across Covolt's applications and work closely with the CTO, UX, and backend teams.

Your Impact
You build the digital interfaces through which our energy platform becomes accessible.

At Covolt, impact isn't about the number of screens you deliver. It's about how effectively our customers, partners, and internal teams can understand and interact with complex energy systems.

Speed, ownership, and innovation as the foundation.

Covolt is building a future-proof energy system that brings together data, technology, and flexibility.

We believe in speed, ownership, and data-driven decision-making as the foundation for continuous improvement.

Within this environment, you will work with a multidisciplinary team of developers, data specialists, UX professionals, and energy experts.

Our platforms continuously process and visualize large volumes of data. The challenge is to translate this complexity into applications that are intuitive, fast, and reliable.

We design the experience.

We build the components.

We develop the applications.

We make complex energy systems accessible.

That is what you will work on.
