Job summary

ABB Marine & Ports seeks a Service Engineer to maintain and upgrade switchboards and electrical distribution on vessels and offshore platforms. You will troubleshoot faults, perform preventive maintenance, and commission new systems on complex projects.

You will work largely on-site with support from ABB specialists, travel extensively, and communicate in English with customers. A technical background and ownership mindset are essential for success in this role.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's level working and thinking ability in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
• Several years of experience in a technical service role.
• Experience with marine or offshore installations preferred but not essential.

Responsibilities

• Troubleshoot faults ranging from straightforward to highly complex on vessels and offshore platforms.
• Perform maintenance on breakers, switchboards, and related systems per schedules and specs.
• Commission new systems where precision is essential and collaborate with specialists on larger projects.
• Provide remote support via phone or Teams, or on-site assistance to customers.
• Coordinate activities on-site with engineers, subcontractors, and customer personnel; act as main contact.
• Prepare technical reports and service documentation; advise on maintenance strategies and improvements.

Troubleshooting a propulsion failure on a naval vessel in Den Helder. Optimizing power management systems on an oil tanker in the middle of the North Sea. This is your playground: from 100,000 hp main engines to diesel-electric propulsion systems with 4 MW Azipods.What you will doPower: Switchboards and Electrical DistributionThis is where your focus lies. You will maintain and upgrade switchboards, troubleshoot faults, and ensure the electrical infrastructure on board remains operational. From simple breaker issues to complex network failures.Your work will vary from preventive maintenance to urgent troubleshooting. Sometimes it will be a quick repair, while other times you may spend days analyzing a complex fault in integrated systems. You will work independently on-site, while always having the support of ABB specialists whenever needed.Your responsibilitiesTroubleshoot faults ranging from straightforward to highly complex, on vessels, offshore platforms, and occasionally in industrial environments.Perform maintenance on breakers, switchboards, and related systems in accordance with schedules and specifications.Commission new systems where precision is essential. On larger projects, you will work closely with specialists.Provide support through remote troubleshooting via phone or Microsoft Teams, or by assisting customers on-site.Coordinate activities on-site with fellow engineers, subcontractors, and customer personnel. You will be the main point of contact.Prepare technical reports, service reports, and documentation.Advise customers on maintenance strategies and potential improvements based on your findings.How the team worksYou will be part of a team of 20 Service Engineers, divided across three disciplines. Several colleagues, like you, specialize in switchboards and breakers. In addition, there are specialists in Drives and Automation.You will work independently most of the time, but collaboration is close and accessible. Whenever technical challenges arise, colleagues are quick to support one another.Our Operations team, consisting of five coordinators, manages all logistics, from the initial customer request through to invoicing. Your hotel in Genoa or transportation from the airport in Houston will be arranged for you. Back-office, sales, and project teams handle the rest. During projects, your practical expertise is highly valued and actively requested.What you bringBachelor's level working and thinking ability in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.Several years of experience in a technical service role.Experience with marine or offshore installations is preferred but not essential.Willingness to travel extensively and spend periods away from home, ranging from a few days to several weeks.A strong sense of ownership. On-site, you are the expert customers rely on.Confidence to express your own opinions and contribute to better solutions.The ability to combine independence with a strong team-oriented mindset.Excellent verbal and written English communication skills.
