Job summary

ViCentra, based in Utrecht, the Netherlands, is hiring an Embedded Software Engineer to design and build software inside their medical devices. You will work in the R&D software team, coding in embedded C for resource-constrained microcontrollers, shaping architecture, and ensuring releases meet safety, regulatory, and usability needs.

As a senior contributor, you will mentor colleagues, balance hardware limits, manage risks, contribute to cybersecurity, and collaborate with management, peers

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Lead and deliver software projects from concept through production
• Design, implement and review embedded C code for resource-constrained microcontrollers
• Shape software architecture and manage technical risks
• Prototype, test and report throughout product development life cycle
• Write requirements, specifications, test plans and procedures for compliant medical software
• Contribute to cybersecurity approach including threat modelling

Your Impact

As Embedded Software Engineer, you\'ll design and build the software that runs inside ViCentra\'s medical devices, taking it from first concept all the way to manufacture. Working in our R&D software team, you\'ll shape the architecture, write and review embedded C for resource-constrained microcontrollers, and make sure every release is safe, effective and built around the real needs of people living with diabetes.

This is where engineering craft meets real-world responsibility. Software on a medical device leaves no room for shortcuts, so you\'ll balance tight hardware constraints, cybersecurity and rigorous regulatory standards while keeping projects moving. As a senior voice in the team, you\'ll also raise the bar for others, mentoring engineers and helping build a best in class software development environment.

What You\'ll Take On

In your role, you will:

• Lead and contribute to software projects from concept through to production, delivering on time and on budget.
• Design, implement and review embedded C code for resource-constrained microcontrollers, aligned to the intended design specification.
• Shape software architecture and design decisions, identifying and managing technical risks within your area of responsibility.
• Prototype, test and report throughout the product development life cycle, including unit and integration testing.
• Write the requirements, specifications, test plans, protocols, procedures and trainings that make great software compliant medical device software.
• Contribute to the cybersecurity approach for your software components, including threat modelling and vulnerability management.
• Carry out verification, validation and release activities, together with the quality system documentation that goes with them.
• Provide effort estimates and help plan and scope the software team\'s work packages.
• Mentor less experienced engineers and take part in peer code reviews that lift quality for the whole team.
• Communicate clearly with management, peers and vendors, with occasional travel to partner companies in the Netherlands and abroad.

What You Bring

• A Bachelor's degree in software or computer engineering, or equivalent professional experience. A Master\'s degree is a plus.
• A proven track record in embedded programming in C, with substantial professional experience developing software for resource-constrained microcontrollers.
• Hands-on involvement in every development stage, from software architecture and design through testing, release and maintenance.
• Experience testing embedded software applications, such as unit and integration testing.
• A track record of delivering on time as part of a multi-disciplinary project team.
• Strong technical writing skills and the ability to produce clean, formal documentation.
• A high level of accuracy and attention to detail, the ownership to work autonomously, and the confidence to give and receive constructive feedback.
• Curiosity and a proactive mindset toward learning new technologies and domain-specific regulations, plus fluency in English.
• Bonus points for experience with RTOS, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), Python, test automation for embedded applications, PCB design or cybersecurity.
• Experience in the medical device industry is a strong plus, especially with standards such as IEC 62304, IEC 60601-1, IEC 62366, IEC 81001-5-1, ISO 14971, ISO 13485 and 21 CFR 820.
