Job description

At Eneco, you work on complex energy questions that matter. In this role, you help us use flexibility from our asset portfolio in a smarter way. That means your work supports the growth of renewable energy and helps Eneco create value in changing energy markets.

You join the Asset Optimization team, a small team of data scientists within the Analytics & Realization domain. The wider domain consists of around 20 colleagues, including analysts, product managers, project managers and data scientists. You work closely with colleagues from trading, tech, operations and dispatching.

This is a role with both depth and variety. You build and improve models, translate market opportunities into practical solutions and work with stakeholders to bring your ideas into production. You get ownership, short feedback loops and room to grow your expertise in a team that values collaboration and learning.

As a Data Scientist in Asset Optimization, you develop and improve optimization models that help steer Eneco’s asset portfolio. Your work supports decision-making in trading, asset operations, and our 24/7 operational environment, with a focus on making models more robust, scalable, and commercially valuable.

Your primary focus lies within the optimization domain of our Virtual Power Plant, where you help maximize the value of flexibility from a diverse portfolio of assets, including batteries, conventional generation assets, wind farms, and solar parks. Over the coming years, you will contribute to key initiatives such as international rollouts and the continued development of advanced battery optimization capabilities.

Working in short feedback cycles, you are involved throughout the entire lifecycle of a solution: from analysing challenges and designing models to building, testing, deploying, and continuously improving them. Because your work is closely connected to live energy markets and operational processes, the impact of your contributions can often be seen quickly and directly.

In this role, you design, develop, and maintain optimization models that enable Eneco to operate its asset portfolio in a smart, reliable, and profitable way. You continuously improve the performance and resilience of models used in live trading and operational processes, while collaborating closely with colleagues across data science, technology, forecasting, dispatching, trading, and operations. You identify opportunities to create additional value, help translate ideas into working solutions, and build reliable, maintainable code that can scale with the growing needs of the business. At the same time, you contribute to operational stability by monitoring performance, resolving issues when they arise, and using lessons learned from incidents to further strengthen our optimization platform.

  • Build and improve optimization models for energy asset dispatch;
  • Translate contracts, market opportunities and asset behaviour into mathematical models;
  • Develop clean, modular Python code and contribute to production-quality solutions;
  • Improve monitoring and reliability based on real-time and realised asset data;
  • Work with data scientists, developers, traders, dispatchers and operations colleagues;
  • Help solve incidents when needed and use learnings to improve the model landscape;
  • Bring your own ideas for improvement and turn strong ideas into practical results.

You are a data scientist who likes complex problems, but also wants to turn analysis into working solutions. You enjoy modelling, coding and working with others to create business impact. You do not need to know everything already. What matters is that you learn quickly, ask good questions and take ownership.

You bring:
  • A master’s degree or equivalent experience in a quantitative field, such as computer science, mathematics, statistics, econometrics, physics, engineering or a related field;
  • Around 1 to 4 years of relevant work experience in data science, analytics or a comparable role;
  • Strong Python skills and an understanding of clean code, testing and monitoring;
  • Experience with mathematical modelling, optimization or algorithm development;
  • Experience with cloud-based data environments, preferably including Azure, Databricks or similar tools;
  • The ability to understand business needs and translate them into robust data-driven solutions;
  • Experience in energy, trading or consulting is a strong plus;
  • Strong English communication skills. Dutch is a plus, but not required;
  • Currently living in the Netherlands.

You will join the Analytics & Realization domain, part of Trade Operations & IT. The domain has around 20 colleagues and includes several teams, such as Asset Optimization, dispatching and nomination, customer-domain analytics and product or project management.

Within Asset Optimization, you work in a team of four data scientists and a team lead. The team works closely with developers, short-term desk traders, dispatchers and operations colleagues. This gives you a broad view of how models are used in practice and how your work contributes to better energy decisions.

You work at Eneco World, our modern and sustainable headquarters in Rotterdam, close to Rotterdam Alexander station. We work hybrid, combining office collaboration with working from home.
