Salt is currently hiring a Data Engineering Manager, for a client of ours in Amsterdam. The role requires you to have kvk/zzp and is paying around 145 euros per hour.

Senior Manager of Data Engineering is a seasoned technical leader and organizational strategist who shapes the vision and execution of the company’s data engineering initiatives. This role combines deep technical expertise with strong leadership capabilities to drive innovation, scalability, and excellence across the data engineering organization.

You will collaborate closely with technology and business leaders to define and deliver the data engineering roadmap, oversee capacity planning, and ensure successful project execution. You will also play a pivotal role in developing talent, identifying skill gaps, and fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Technical Excellence

• Translate business needs into scalable data solutions, developing logical data models aligned with both short- and long-term objectives.
• Define semantic architectures by identifying key entities and relationships, and evolve them into mature, business-aligned data taxonomies.
• Design and implement scalable physical data models that integrate seamlessly into the company’s infrastructure and workflows.

Data Architecture & Engineering

• Design and maintain efficient data flows across systems and workflows to drive operational efficiency.
• Develop data solutions that support varied consumption patterns, including streaming and batch processing.
• Enforce data governance and standardization practices across all engineering activities.
• Oversee the full lifecycle of a portfolio of data processing systems and platforms.
• Guide teams in building extensible data pipelines across diverse data encodings, protocols, and unstructured data sources.

Operational Excellence & Reliability

• Ensure high data quality by defining and monitoring SLIs and SLOs for key data systems.
• Develop and enforce automated validation and testing strategies for end-to-end data pipelines.
• Build solutions that comply with data-related standards and regulations.
• Ensure system performance, scalability, and resilience by proactively identifying and resolving bottlenecks or risks.

Software Development & Engineering Best Practices

• Oversee the development of software applications, ensuring adherence to best practices and use of appropriate technologies.
• Promote maintainability and scalability through clean, reusable code and standardized libraries.
• Evaluate emerging technologies to identify tools and techniques that enhance data engineering capabilities.

Team Development & Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Foster a high-performance culture through coaching, mentoring, and continuous professional development.
• Lead efforts to advance data engineering practices across the organization, including training, onboarding, and community-building initiatives.
• Collaborate with other teams to improve, scale, and extend data engineering tools and infrastructure.
• Champion the operational rollout of data governance policies, ensuring data accountability, cultural adoption, and management excellence within your domain.
