Job summary

Leiden University’s Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) invites applications for an Assistant Professor in Crisis Governance. The role spans teaching across BA and MSc programs, research leadership, and curriculum renewal within a multidisciplinary environment in The Hague.

The candidate will conduct research, publish in top journals, supervise theses, and contribute to policy-relevant knowledge while collaborating across ISGA and with international partners.

Qualifications

• PhD in crisis and disaster management, safety studies, or related field.
• Demonstrable research experience in crisis governance, disaster management, or safety studies.
• Outstanding research qualities with publication record, and excellence in teaching.
• Commitment to a close-knit, interdisciplinary academic community.
• Ability to connect academic research to policy impact.
• Excellent command of English; willingness to improve Dutch language proficiency.

Responsibilities

• Develop and teach courses in crisis governance, safety, or disaster studies.
• Conduct independent research related to crisis governance.
• Publish high-quality output in academic and non-academic venues.
• Renew and improve educational practices at Bachelor’s and Master’s level.
• Take on administrative and coordination tasks within ISGA.
• Support development and implementation of ISGA’s research strategy.
• Supervise theses and capstone projects.
• Contribute to student mentoring and advising within the tutorial system.
• Manage research and training projects for third parties.
• Possibly teach across security-related themes beyond crisis governance.
