Job description

Introduction

Within ASML's Mechanical Development and System Dynamics team in Veldhoven, you will contribute to advancing the understanding of acoustic disturbances in highly precise lithography systems. Acoustic loads can influence system performance, particularly in environments where accuracy and throughput are essential. This internship focuses on extending an existing reduced-order acoustic modeling framework by introducing stochastic acoustic sources. Through this Internship, you will combine theory, simulation, and validation to help improve acoustic disturbance modeling. If you are interested in computational acoustics, numerical methods, and signal processing, this internship offers an opportunity to work on a relevant and challenging research topic.

Your assignment

In this Internship you will investigate how stochastic acoustic sources, which have no known time relationship, can be represented within an existing reduced-order modelling framework. You will explore theoretical concepts, develop modeling approaches, and validate results using simulations and measurements. Your work will contribute to a more realistic representation of acoustic disturbances while maintaining computational efficiency. Your main responsibilities will be:

  • Conduct a literature review on stochastic acoustic source modeling
  • Develop modal descriptions for stochastic acoustic sources
  • Investigate modeling approaches for point, line, and surface sources
  • Implement stochastic source representations within a reduced-order framework
  • Create and evaluate a modal stochastic source matrix
  • Compare simulation results with experimental measurements
  • Document findings and provide recommendations for future development

This is a master's thesis internship for minimum 9 months, minimum 5 days per week (3 days on‑site). The start date of this internship is flexible from October 2026 onwards.

Your profile

To be suitable for the internship, you:

  • Are pursuing a master's degree in applied physics, mathematics, mechanical engineering, or a related field at a university
  • Have an interest in computational acoustics and acoustic modeling
  • Have basic knowledge of numerical methods and simulation techniques
  • Have an interest in dynamic measurements and signal processing
  • Have basic experience with MATLAB
  • Are analytical, proactive, and able to communicate effectively in English

This Internship is suited for students who enjoy combining theoretical research with practical validation. You will work alongside experienced engineers and researchers while contributing to innovative solutions for complex acoustic challenges. The internship provides an opportunity to deepen your technical expertise, broaden your research experience, and create meaningful impact within ASML's technology development environment. Through this Internship you will gain hands‑on experience in advanced modeling techniques and contribute to future improvements in precision system performance.

Other requirements you need to meet
  • You are enrolled at an educational institute for the entire duration of the internship, and you are at least 18 years old at the start of the internship;
  • If you are a non‑EU citizen, studying in the Netherlands, your university is willing to sign the documents relevant for doing an internship (i.e., Nuffic agreement);
  • You attach your cover letter with a clear motivation on why you are interested in this internship assignment in particular;
  • You need to be located in the Netherlands to be perform your internship. In case you are currently living/studying outside of the Netherlands, your application shows the willingness to relocate.
