What We Do
Utilus is a fast-growing and highly ambitious software delivery company. We design, build, manage, and operate scalable and complex software projects at the heart of our clients' primary business, including Tennet, Greenchoice, Dura Vermeer, and Nederlandse Loterij.
We are deeply embedded in the green energy sector, building real-time systems that manage thousands drive the transition to a more sustainable world.
We believe in the universal truth that true transformation is only attainable if our clients are prepared to "Do the work". That’s why at Utilus, we help our clients to "Do the work" by developing an approach to improve and renew essential IT, all while keeping the client's business running smoothly.
We take an honest and constructive approach, our two core values, to renewing and enhancing essential IT systems.
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced AI-driven Systems Engineer with a unique skill set who can design, update, and maintain the digital infrastructure that keeps companies running—without typing mountains of code. That sees AI as a reliable tool for building systems and understands that the future of engineering is shifting from manual coding toward thoughtful system design supported by intelligent tooling.
As an AI-driven Systems Engineer, you will act as the architect, designer and coach for a new approach to building and maintaining software. Your work will focus on the core systems that form the backbone of our clients operations. Using large language models as your main tool, turn complex ideas into living prototypes quickly and then refine those prototypes into stable, reliable, enterprise-grade systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Design Next-Generation Infrastructure You are able to design full-stack, large-scale systems with clear architectures, robust patterns, and long-term maintainability—at a pace far faster than traditional timelines. You won’t be coding by hand, but you will provide guidance and direct how systems should be designed.
- Renovate Legacy Landscapes You will use AI tools to overhaul aging systems and modernize architectures. You lead the transformation while the AI tools handle much of the implementation, ensuring systems remain performant, reliable, and maintainable. You are the transformation driver and use AI tooling to do the labor.
- Deliver Prototypes at Speed You turn concepts into working demos quickly, often within a day. You show clients what is possible far sooner than they expect it.
- Drive Observability and Reliability You drive observability, monitoring and reliability across systems, maintaining high operational standards and strong DORA performance.
- Mentor and Elevate Teams You coach architects and developers in using AI as their primary tool, guiding them toward more strategic, effective, and sustainable engineering practices than traditional hand-coded development allows.
What We Are Looking For
- You understand large-scale software systems from years of experience, and you’re ready to move beyond routine coding tasks
- You think in systems, not in Jira tickets
- You can hold a complete architecture in your mind and shape it with precision
- You approach problems with both the perspective of a product owner and the skills of a senior engineer: you see user stories as blueprints for automated construction
- You are energized by building real, functioning systems through structured prompting, iteration, and architectural thinking
- You are eager to work where software development moves from manual coding to thoughtful system design
Skill Requirements
- Master’s degree (or equivalent experience) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field
- 8+ years of experience in large-scale software engineering or systems architecture
- Strong experience with infrastructure, backend design, reliability engineering, and platform-level considerations
- Solid understanding of scalability, distributed systems, observability, and modern DevOps practices
- Curiosity and ambition to use AI as core tools for building systems, not just assistants
\>Confidence in turning a concept on a whiteboard into a running system—by directing LLMs rather than typing code
Why this Job is Different
Traditional engineering is a craft of labor. This role is a craft of thought.
You will work at a level where ideas and architectural vision become running software quickly, and where your influence extends beyond systems into the way engineers think, learn, and build.
If you have spent years building complex systems and feel ready to step into a more strategic and creative approach—this is the role for you!
If you want to shape the future of how software is built, we would love to hear from you.
What We Offer

- Impactful Projects: Work on complex, large-scale systems where AI is used as core tools, allowing you to deliver prototypes and solutions faster and more strategically than traditional coding methods.
- Collaborative culture: Work alongside brilliant minds, exchange ideas, and contribute to a dynamic and inclusive work environment.
