Job summary

HSBC's Global Capability Network in Kuala Lumpur is seeking a senior leader to head Clearing and Settlements operations. You will manage a team of about 40 full-time staff, own risk and control, drive service delivery, and push continuous improvement across Direct Custody, Clearing, and Global Custody for UK and Europe.

The role requires strong stakeholder engagement across regions, hands-on process enhancements, and effective budget oversight, with flexibility to align with UK shift patterns

Responsibilities

• Lead Custody Clearing and Settlements operations in Kuala Lumpur, overseeing teams supporting Direct Custody and Clearing and Global Custody for UK and Europe.
• Drive process improvement initiatives to streamline operations, enhance productivity, and optimise resource utilisation.
• Establish and track KPIs and KRIs, providing actionable performance insights.
• Deliver a strong risk and control framework, driving identification, escalation, and remediation of control weaknesses and operational risks.
• Ensure adherence to relevant regulatory requirements (including UK FCA Client Assets Sourcebook or CASS, Dodd-Frank Act, European Market Infrastructure Regulation, and Markets in Financial Instruments Directive).
• Manage change delivery and implementation of process and control enhancements, ensuring effective stakeholder communication and governance.
• Lead, coach, and develop the management team and wider organisation, building capability and a culture of continuous improvement.
• Manage costs versus plan, including effective oversight of budgets related to headcount and supporting infrastructure.

You’ll lead a Clearing and Settlements operations organisation in HSBC’s Global Capability Network in Kuala Lumpur, supporting critical Markets and Securities Services activities across Direct Custody and Clearing and Global Custody. The role combines leadership of a sizeable team (c. 40 full-time employees) with ownership of risk and control, service delivery, and continuous improvement. You’ll also partner closely with onshore hubs and global stakeholders, particularly across the UK and Europe, to deliver a consistent and high-quality operating model.

What you’ll do:

• Lead Custody Clearing and Settlements operations in Kuala Lumpur, overseeing teams supporting Direct Custody and Clearing and Global Custody for UK and Europe.
• Drive process improvement initiatives to streamline operations, enhance productivity, and optimise resource utilisation.
• Establish and track Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and Key Risk Indicators (KRIs), providing actionable performance insights.
• Deliver a strong risk and control framework, driving identification, escalation, and remediation of control weaknesses and operational risks.
• Ensure adherence to relevant regulatory requirements (including UK FCA Client Assets Sourcebook or CASS, Dodd-Frank Act, European Market Infrastructure Regulation, and Markets in Financial Instruments Directive).

What you will need to succeed in the role:

• Strong understanding of Custody Clearing and Settlement operations.
• Proven capability to lead and manage an operations function, including responsibility for staffing decisions and team development (c. 40 full-time employees in this role).
• Strong risk, control, and exception management capability, including escalation and remediation of issues.
• Experience working with stakeholders across multiple regions, particularly the UK and Europe, and ability to operate effectively in a virtual global team.
• Ability to shape and execute onshore and offshore operating models in line with global standards and agreed process flows.
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to manage local and international relationships across an organisation.
• Budget management capability, including monitoring costs versus targets and driving efficiencies.
• Flexibility to work the UK shift, with potential rotation to Asia or Middle East and North Africa shifts if required.

What additional skills will be good to have?

• Experience partnering with Audit and Compliance to resolve audit findings and deliver sustainable corrective actions.
• Familiar working knowledge of relevant technology used within Custody Operations environments.
• Ability to deliver non-technology-led efficiency improvements (\"quick wins\") that reduce processing cost and marginal support effort.
• Experience establishing governance and reporting mechanisms to monitor delivery and manage risks/issues.
• Track record of supporting market-led and business-led initiatives across hubs and regions.
• Strong relationship management skills to support client service operating models and stakeholder engagement.
