A leading company in manufacturing seeks a Supplier Development Engineer to improve supplier performance and quality. This role involves technical assessments, audits, and collaboration with cross-functional teams to optimize supplier processes, with a strong emphasis on Japanese manufacturing practices. Applicants should possess a Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering and over 7 years of relevant experience.
We are seeking a highly experienced Supplier Development Engineer with a deep technical background in molding, stamping, plating, and other core mechanical component manufacturing processes. This individual will play a critical role in improving supplier performance, driving quality improvements, and ensuring robust manufacturing practices across our supply base.
The ideal candidate has hands-on experience in automotive OEM or Tier 1 supplier environments or with high-complexity contract manufacturers such as Plexus or Benchmark. Experience working within a Japanese manufacturing culture is a strong plus, as it aligns well with our emphasis on structured problem-solving and supplier coaching.
Key Responsibilities:
* Develop and implement supplier improvement strategies to support product quality, delivery, and cost targets.
* Conduct in-depth technical assessments of suppliers in the areas of tooling, stamping, molding, plating, and other precision manufacturing processes.
* Serve as a coach and technical advisor to suppliers, guiding them through process optimization, root cause analysis, and corrective action implementation.
* Lead supplier audits and production readiness reviews (PPAP, APQP, FMEA, Control Plans, etc.).
* Collaborate cross-functionally with design, manufacturing, quality, and sourcing teams to ensure component manufacturability and cost-effectiveness.
* Drive continuous improvement initiatives using Lean, Six Sigma, and structured problem-solving tools.
* Develop technical training material and mentor both internal teams and suppliers.
Qualifications:
* Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
* 7+ years of experience in supplier development, quality engineering, or manufacturing engineering, with a strong focus on mechanical components.
* Deep expertise in tooling, molding, stamping, plating, and precision mechanical part fabrication.
* Experience working within or with Japanese manufacturing organizations strongly preferred.
* Strong knowledge of PPAP, APQP, SPC, FMEA, MSA, and other quality frameworks.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; capable of working with all levels from operators to executives.
* Willingness to travel (domestic and international) to support supplier assessments and development.
Preferred Qualifications:
* Background in toolmaking or tooling engineering.
* Automotive industry experience or other high-volume, high-reliability sectors.
* Certified Six Sigma Green or Black Belt, or similar training.
