Job summary

Soft Space is seeking a Backend Software Engineer with strong Java and/or Go experience to design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services. The role involves APIs, microservices, data modelling, and cloud deployment, with collaboration across product and delivery teams.

You will contribute to API design, distributed systems, and performance optimisations while ensuring code quality, tests, and CI/CD practices are in place.

Qualifications

• 4+ years backend development experience, Java and/or Go.
• Experience with Spring ecosystem for Java and Go frameworks such as Gin, Echo, or Fiber.
• Experience designing microservices, REST/SOAP APIs, and distributed systems.
• Strong knowledge of relational databases and schema design; NoSQL exposure.
• Experience with message brokers such as Kafka, ActiveMQ, RabbitMQ.
• Experience with application servers, containers, and deployment tools (Docker, Kubernetes).
• Proficiency in Vue or React and CSS for frontend contributions.
• Solid unit/integration testing, debugging, CI/CD, and Git workflows.
• Strong analytical, communication, and collaboration skills.
• Cloud experience (AWS/Azure/GCP) is a plus.
• Fintech or regulated domain familiarity is advantageous.

Responsibilities

Job Summary

Design, develop, test, and maintain secure, scalable, reliable, and high-quality software applications using modern engineering practices and technologies.

The role focuses primarily on backend development using Java and/or Go, while contributing across APIs, databases, system integrations, application performance, testing, and deployment. The Software Engineer works closely with engineering, product, and delivery teams to translate business and technical requirements into maintainable software solutions and support applications throughout the development lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, enhance, and maintain backend applications and services using Java and/or Go in accordance with established engineering standards and system requirements.
• Develop and integrate APIs, microservices, and distributed system components to support reliable communication between internal and external systems.
• Design and work with relational databases, including data modelling, schema development, query optimisation, and application-level data access, while supporting NoSQL technologies where required.
• Develop and maintain application components using appropriate frameworks, libraries, application servers, and container technologies.
• Contribute to frontend application development where required using modern JavaScript frameworks such as Vue or React.
• Apply appropriate software design patterns, clean coding principles, and development practices to produce maintainable, reusable, and reliable software.
• Develop and maintain unit and integration tests to support application quality and minimise regression risks.
• Participate in code reviews and Git-based development workflows to maintain code quality and consistency across the engineering team.
• Support CI/CD, containerisation, build, and deployment activities to enable reliable application delivery across environments.
• Integrate applications with message brokers and event-streaming technologies where required to support asynchronous and distributed processing.
• Troubleshoot and resolve application defects, integration issues, performance concerns, and technical incidents, including supporting root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
• Work closely with Product, Business Analysis, Quality Assurance, DevOps/Platform, and other relevant teams to clarify requirements, manage technical dependencies, and support successful solution delivery.
• Maintain appropriate technical documentation relating to application design, integrations, configurations, and development activities.
• Contribute to continuous improvement in engineering practices, development processes, application quality, and team effectiveness.

Skills & Requirements

• Minimum 4 years of backend software development experience, primarily using Java and/or Go.
• Strong proficiency in Java and/or Go, with sound understanding of object-oriented programming, software design principles, and clean coding practices.
• Experience with the Spring ecosystem for Java and/or commonly used Go frameworks such as Gin, Echo, or Fiber.
• Experience designing and developing microservices, REST/SOAP APIs, and distributed systems within enterprise application environments.
• Strong working knowledge of relational databases, including schema design and query optimisation, with exposure to NoSQL data stores.
• Practical experience with message brokers or event-streaming platforms such as Kafka, ActiveMQ, or RabbitMQ.
• Experience with application servers, containerisation, and deployment technologies, such as Tomcat, WildFly, Docker, and Kubernetes.
• Proficiency in a modern JavaScript framework such as Vue or React, together with solid CSS knowledge.
• Good understanding of unit and integration testing, debugging practices, CI/CD pipelines, and Git-based development workflows.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot application, integration, and performance-related issues.
• Good communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively within cross-functional engineering and delivery teams.
• Strong learning mindset, attention to detail, and accountability for code quality and reliable software delivery.
• Experience with AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform is an advantage.
• Exposure to fintech, payments, financial services, or other regulated technology environments, including familiarity with standards such as EMV or PCI-DSS, is an advantage.
