Senior Quantity Surveyor – Highways

Location: Basildon, Essex

Salary: £70,000 to £80,000 plus package

We currently have a vacancy for a Senior Quantity Surveyor to work on Highways and Civils Projects within the East Anglia and Northern Home Counties Area. Our client is a civils company working across various sectors. The successful candidate will join an established Highways Division.

The role is a senior-level position where you will lead major projects within the Highways sector, including Highways Alteration, Section 278 works, and local authority maintenance work. You will report to the commercial manager and will be responsible for overseeing Assistant Quantity Surveyors on larger projects. Your primary responsibility will be leading the commercial aspects of the company's project portfolio, working with operational teams to ensure profitability and contractual compliance.

You will collaborate closely with project teams, clients, and stakeholders to drive commercial success across your designated projects.

Responsibilities:
  1. Review subcontractor agreements, predominantly NEC4; experience with Term Maintenance Contracts is advantageous. Identify key commercial liabilities.
  2. Establish clear month-end processes to ensure timely applications and billing, with accurate accruals and contingencies.
  3. Monitor and report project performance against bids, forecasts, and financial targets using cost value reporting (CVR), highlighting areas for improvement.
  4. Assess and mitigate commercial risks, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations.
  5. Prepare regular reports on commercial performance, providing insights and recommendations to senior management.
  6. Lead negotiations with clients to resolve commercial disputes.
  7. Maintain profitability on all projects by managing budgets, costs, and financial performance effectively.
  8. Build and maintain strong relationships with clients to ensure high satisfaction and repeat business.
  9. Identify and manage commercial risks, ensuring compliance and minimizing liabilities.
  10. Provide timely and accurate reports on commercial performance, supporting strategic decision-making.
Candidate Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Quantity Surveying, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • 5-10 years of experience in a commercial management role within the highways or civil engineering sector, covering various contract types.
  • Familiarity with NEC4 forms of contract.
  • Strong understanding of contracts, commercial principles, and legal frameworks.
  • Proven track record in managing project budgets and achieving financial targets.
  • Excellent negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
