Job summary

Standard Chartered is seeking an experienced Operations leader to oversee custody services, including client service management, transaction processing, and risk reporting. You will define scalable frameworks, drive continuous improvements, and manage offshore teams to deliver high-quality service for local BAM clients.

The role requires strong governance, regulatory compliance, and collaboration with cross-functional teams to support new client onboarding and revenue retention.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Banking/Finance/IT or equivalent.
  • Experience in Securities Services/Market Operations is advantageous.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills.

Key Responsibilities
Strategy
  • Define, document, implement, and maintain scalable and efficient custody operational frameworks.
  • Drive continuous quality improvement and automation across custody
  • Manage a growing offshore outsource team and empower the team to take on greater responsibilities.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across the organization to ensure seamless and scalable operations.
  • Drive the implementation of new clients, products, and services.
  • Lead hubbing of operations right shoring for FSS markets.
  • Work with Compliance to understand new regulatory requirements and ensure we fulfil our obligations.
  • Form an integral part of the front to back process flow. Review processes and procedures to identify weaknesses/inefficiencies and recommend remedial action as required.
  • Take active interest in changes to the Financial Services industry.
  • Works closely across the bank to ensure best in class & quality services are being provided to local BAM clients
  • Works closely with FI to align and understand client strategic growth opportunities for the local BAM clients
  • Ensures consistent levels of service are provided to clients
  • Thorough understanding of clients and ability to deliver in challenging situations
  • Build strong relationship and trust with local BAM clients
  • Anticipate and embrace change to retain and build a competitive edge
Business
  • To effectively lead, manage and process Standard Chartered Bank custody transactions (safekeeping, transfer, reconciliations, billing) on daily basis and elevate any exceptions which requires immediate resolution.
  • Support projects around Custody and Market changes.
  • Resolve queries raised by clients and stakeholders, seeking guidance from Compliance where required.
  • Lead and engage with new on-boarding of clients to facilitate the operational take-on and set-up of new relationship.
  • Achieves targets for revenue retention and defence from existing mandates.
  • Identifies innovative solutions to clients’ requirements, maximising re-use of existing capabilities
  • Identifies opportunities for growth from existing business and for referrals to work with FSS RMs and Sales for new products and services
  • Researches clients to fully understand their business model and identify innovative ways to anticipate and manage their requirements
  • Monitors competitor service offerings to identify and remediate any gaps
  • Adds value to client relationships by developing MI, enabling clients to enhance their own efficiency and interaction with SCB
  • Maintains appropriate commercial balance between needs of clients and long-term profitability / efficiency of the business
Processes
  • To undertake periodic self assessment on key controls to access the proper functioning and adequacy of existing controls.
  • Assist in coordinating facilitating and promoting understanding of operational risk and in implementation and the management of it.

  • Ensure that turnaround times in respect of processing various transactions are met on a constant basis as per agreed SLA with respective units.
  • Ensure that all enquiries / complaints are resolved within the agreed turnaround timelines.
  • To ensure that Department Operating Instructions (DOI), checklists, SLA are kept up to date, and shared with the team-members and reviewed to ensure practicing of the same.
  • Acts as escalation point as per the agreed client matrix and takes leading role in managing issues to resolution.
People & Talent
  • To develop strong skillset and talent to ensure that service delivery to clients and processes are carried out with minimal risks and with high quality standards.
  • To develop key working relationships with internal customers and support units etc.
  • Build a qualified FSS pipeline that is sufficiently diverse to realise short term revenue objectives while also building for the future, balancing between large strategic mandates and less complex deals.
  • Build and expand the Bank’s network to reach potential clients to assess new sales opportunities and prioritise those opportunities accordingly in consideration of the business gestation period.
Risk Management
  • Advanced knowledge of RISK gradings, BASIL Norms
  • Ensure all control/operating procedure and documents are properly followed.
  • Ensure compliance to all established procedures, regulations and the Group Guidelines.
  • To keep track of changes (internal and external) affecting Clients and communicate such changes, along with impact analyses, on a pro-active basis, through newsflashes, market insights, operations guides and through other routine communication.
  • Diving end to end process reviews. Driving Process Risk Assessment’s and key control reviews and implementing right controls.
  • Producing Root Cause Assessment for issues/Incidents.
  • Partner with risk and other internal teams (GIA/UORM’s) during reviews and mitigate any risk findings.
  • Takes responsibility for identifying, assessing, monitoring, controlling and mitigating risks to the Group. Also, an awareness and understanding of the main risks facing the Group and the role the individual and the team play in managing them
  • Under Risk Management Framework – the role is responsible to act in accordance with our Bank and departmental policies.
Governance
  • Promote and embed a culture of openness, trust and risk awareness, where ethical, legal, regulatory and policy compliant conduct is the norm.
  • Ensure credit, operational, legal, regulatory, reputation, compliance is held to the highest standards of risk management (at a product and enterprise level as relevant)
  • Identify and mitigate risks through day-to-day analysis of transactional data, external factors and other drivers
  • Identify and mitigate digital and data risks in accordance to local markets’ data protection and privacy laws
  • Keep abreast with changing regulatory requirements and provide advisory support to clients
Regulatory & Business Conduct
  • Display exemplary conduct and live by the Group’s Values and Code of Conduct.
  • Take personal responsibility for embedding the highest standards of ethics, including regulatory and business conduct, across Standard Chartered Bank.   • Business partners across countries, Central operations, GBS SSO Management team and Larger SSO team.
  • Closely liaises with internal technology and operations teams to define common standards to adopt in managing the operational relationship with clients, under the auspices of the overall client management model
  • Communicates Client Solutions strategy to business partners to ensure understanding of Client Management principles
  • Works closely with FSS RMs, Sales and Product Management to define client requirements and prioritise accordingly

The Ideal Candidate
  • Bachelors Degree in Banking/Finance/Information Technology or equivalent
  • Min 7-10 years of relevant experience – Banking & Financial.
  • Experience in a Securities Services / Market Operations / Investment Banking
  • In-depth knowledge of Securities settlements will be an added advantage.
  • Ability to learn quickly, transfers knowledge appropriately, understand and interpret numeric data.
  • Evidence of good analytical, statistical and data mining skills to study trends and make projections.
  • Consistently demonstrates clear and concise written and verbal communication skills
  • Skills – any added skills such as VBA, python, programming, advance in excel – added advantage.
  • Candidates with experience in Asian Securities markets has a significant advantage – HK, SG, TH
