Key Responsibilities:
Purpose of Role
To support the delivery of high-quality teaching and learning in Science, Design Technology, and Art by preparing and maintaining equipment, materials, and teaching spaces. The role includes providing technical support to staff and students during practical activities, ensuring health and safety protocols are followed, and contributing to a creative, engaging, and safe learning environment.
Key Responsibilities
Support teaching and learning across the Science, DT, and Art departments through the preparation, setup, and maintenance of resources and equipment.
Ensure compliance with all health and safety regulations and contribute to the promotion of a safe working environment.
Contribute to the organisation and efficiency of the labs, studios, and workshop spaces to ensure high standards of presentation and functionality.
Offer technical guidance to students and staff during practical sessions, supporting creativity, innovation, and safe experimentation.
Play an active role in the planning, delivery, and development of departmental projects and student exhibitions or showcases
Skills, Qualifications and Experience
A relevant technical diploma or certificate (e.g. in Science, Engineering, Art & Design, or a related field).
Prior experience working in a laboratory, workshop, or art studio environment—preferably within a school setting.
Good working knowledge of health and safety procedures, including safe handling of chemicals and tools (COSHH, CLEAPSS familiarity desirable).
Main Duties
1. Preparation and Support for Lessons
Prepare and set up equipment, tools, materials, and chemicals for Science, DT, and Art lessons in accordance with lesson plans.
Provide practical support and guidance to staff and students during lessons, demonstrations, and projects.
Assist in trialling, adapting, or developing new experiments or creative activities in collaboration with teachers.
Contribute to the smooth running of lessons by managing equipment and troubleshooting during activities.
2. Maintenance and Organisation
Maintain all technical areas, including labs, studios, and workshops, ensuring they are clean, safe, and well-organised.
Undertake regular checks of tools, equipment, and machinery; arrange for repairs or servicing where necessary.
Monitor, store, and manage stock of consumables and equipment, including accurate inventory records.
Support procurement by compiling orders, sourcing quotes, and suggesting cost-effective or sustainable alternatives.
3. Health and Safety
Ensure that all departmental activities comply with the school’s health and safety policies and external regulations (e.g. COSHH).
Store materials and hazardous substances safely and dispose of waste in accordance with safety guidelines.
Report and respond appropriately to any hazards, accidents, or incidents.
Contribute to the creation and maintenance of risk assessments, safety notices, and student guidelines.
4. Student Support and Engagement
Support students during practical tasks, including guidance on safe tool/chemical handling and proper artistic or design techniques.
Encourage a culture of independence, curiosity, and responsibility in using technical spaces and equipment.
Provide support during co-curricular events such as science fairs, exhibitions, or creative showcases.
5. Departmental Collaboration
Work flexibly across the Science, DT, and Art departments, adapting to different curricular and creative needs.
Support the technical requirements of school events, assessments, or displays involving Science, DT, or Art work.
Person Specification
Essential
Experience in a laboratory or workshop setting
Understanding of health and safety protocols
Strong organisational and time management skills
Collaborative and flexible working style
Good communication skills with staff and students
Desirable
Previous experience in an international school environment
Formal training in COSHH, CLEAPSS, or equivalent
Familiarity with DT equipment (e.g. 3D printers, laser cutters)
Creative or artistic skills relevant to supporting lessons
Willingness to support co-curricular projects and events
