SAP S/4HANA Logistics Solution Architect – Role Profile
Job Title
SAP S/4HANA Logistics Solution Architect
Role Summary
The SAP S/4HANA Logistics Solution Architect is responsible for defining and governing the end-to-end SAP logistics solution architecture for transformation, implementation, rollout, and optimization programs. The role aligns business strategy, supply chain processes, SAP S/4HANA capabilities, integration architecture, data architecture, security, and deployment standards.
The architect provides strategic and functional-technical leadership across logistics domains, including procurement, inventory management, warehousing, production planning, quality management, order fulfillment, transportation, maintenance spare parts, and supply chain planning. The role ensures that the target solution is scalable, integrated, compliant, supportable, and aligned with SAP best practices and clean-core principles.
Key Responsibilities
1. End-to-End Solution Architecture
- Define the target SAP S/4HANA logistics architecture across business processes, applications, integrations, data, security, and reporting.
- Lead the architecture for end-to-end supply chain processes, including Procure-to-Pay, Plan-to-Produce, Inventory-to-Deliver, Order-to-Cash integration, and warehouse execution.
- Translate business strategy, operating-model requirements, and transformation objectives into a sustainable SAP solution roadmap.
- Establish architecture principles, design standards, decision frameworks, and governance for the logistics solution.
- Ensure alignment between global template requirements and local legal, operational, and regulatory needs.
- Identify standard SAP capabilities, solution gaps, integration dependencies, and extension requirements.
2. SAP Logistics Domain Architecture
- Define the architecture and functional scope for applicable SAP solutions, including:
- SAP S/4HANA Materials Management, Procurement, and Inventory Management
- SAP S/4HANA Production Planning and MRP
- SAP Extended Warehouse Management (embedded or decentralized EWM)
- SAP Sales and Distribution logistics integration
- SAP Quality Management
- SAP Enterprise Asset Management / Plant Maintenance spare-parts processes
- SAP Transportation Management
- SAP Ariba, SAP Integrated Business Planning, SAP BTP, and other connected applications where applicable.
- Define organizational structures and design principles for plants, storage locations, warehouses, purchasing organizations, shipping points, planning areas, and related master data.
- Establish target-state processes for procurement, inventory, warehouse operations, planning, production supply, batch management, serialisation, quality inspection, and logistics execution.
- Ensure appropriate integration between logistics processes and FI/CO, manufacturing, sales, quality, maintenance, and external platforms.
3. Fit-to-Standard and Clean-Core Governance
- Lead fit-to-standard workshops and solution design sessions with business and functional teams.
- Promote adoption of SAP standard processes and configuration before considering enhancements or custom development.
- Review and approve requirements for custom code, Fiori extensions, workflows, reports, interfaces, forms, and BTP extensions.
- Ensure custom developments comply with clean-core principles, extensibility standards, lifecycle management, and supportability requirements.
- Define the appropriate extension approach: in-app extensibility, side-by-side BTP extension, integration, or controlled custom development.
- Govern solution design decisions through architecture review boards and design authorities.
4. Integration Architecture
- Define integration architecture between SAP logistics processes and internal or external applications.
- Work with integration architects to design interfaces using APIs, IDocs, OData services, EDI, middleware, events, and SAP Integration Suite where applicable.
- Ensure connectivity and process integration with:
- Supplier portals and procurement systems
- Third-party logistics providers and warehouse systems
- Manufacturing execution systems
- Transportation carriers and freight platforms
- Planning and forecasting systems
- Product lifecycle management systems
- Tax, regulatory, labeling, serialisation, and compliance systems.
- Define integration patterns, error-handling procedures, monitoring requirements, reconciliation controls, and data ownership.
5. Data and Master Data Architecture
- Define master-data architecture, ownership, governance, quality standards, and lifecycle processes for logistics data.
- Establish standards for material master, business partner/supplier data, purchasing data, bill of materials, routings, work centers, batches, serial numbers, warehouse master data, and planning parameters.
- Guide data migration design, including mapping, cleansing, transformation, reconciliation, mock conversions, and cutover validation.
- Ensure master data supports global process harmonization, reporting, planning, statutory needs, and operational execution.
- Collaborate with data governance teams to establish controls for creation, change approval, and ongoing data-quality monitoring.
6. Security, Compliance, and Controls
- Define logistics access design requirements in collaboration with SAP Security and GRC teams.
- Ensure appropriate segregation of duties, approval controls, inventory controls, auditability, and traceability across logistics processes.
- Support regulated-industry requirements, including GxP, GMP, batch traceability, electronic records, controlled changes, and validation requirements where applicable.
- Ensure solution design supports internal audit, external audit, data-retention, and compliance requirements.
- Define key controls for procurement approvals, inventory adjustments, stock movements, physical inventory, and sensitive master-data changes.
7. Delivery Leadership and Quality Assurance
- Provide architecture leadership throughout discovery, design, build, test, deployment, and hypercare phases.
- Lead cross-functional design reviews and resolve complex process, integration, data, and technical design issues.
- Review configuration designs, functional specifications, technical specifications, and testing approaches for architectural compliance.
- Guide logistics workstream leads and functional consultants on solution design decisions and delivery priorities.
- Manage architecture risks, dependencies, design decisions, assumptions, and change impacts.
- Support project leadership with scope assessment, estimates, release planning, and delivery sequencing.
8. Testing, Cutover, and Operational Readiness
- Define end-to-end testing strategy for integrated logistics scenarios.
- Ensure critical business processes, interface failures, exception handling, controls, reporting, and operational scenarios are covered in testing.
- Provide architectural oversight for cutover activities, including master data, stock migration, open procurement documents, warehouse data, batch data, and reconciliation requirements.
