Qualification & Experience (Sho Qualifications - Malaysia context):

  1. Must be registered with DOSH (JKKP).
  2. Must complete a SHO training program and pass the NIOSH certification exam.
  3. Practical experience in safety and health is usually required (e.g., 3 years in relevant roles).

Key Roles of a Safety & Health Officer:

  1. Compliance & Legal Requirements: Ensure compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) and other local laws (e.g., Malaysia: OSHA 1994, FMA 1967). Prepare reports and documentation for DOSH inspections or audits.
  2. Risk Management: Identify, assess, and control workplace hazards. Conduct Job Safety Analysis (JSA) and Risk Assessments (HIRARC). Investigate incidents, develop corrective and preventive actions, and maintain incident records.
  3. Training & Awareness: Organize safety inductions, toolbox talks, emergency drills, and promote PPE usage, chemical safety, ergonomics, etc.
  4. Safety Inspections & Audits: Conduct regular safety inspections, audit equipment and processes, report unsafe conditions, and ensure corrective actions.
  5. Emergency Preparedness: Develop and maintain Emergency Response Plan (ERP), coordinate first aid, fire drills, and evacuation procedures.
  6. Recordkeeping & Reporting: Maintain safety documentation and report to management and authorities as required.
  7. Promote Safety Culture: Encourage employee involvement, lead safety campaigns, and continuous improvement initiatives.
