Job Description:

The Centre for Advanced 2D Materials (CA2DM) is seeking a Research Fellow or Senior Research Fellow, on a one-year contract, to develop polymer–Karbohm composites for structural applications and to conduct characterization of these materials. The role involves leading compounding laboratory setup projects, including team formation, equipment procurement, and facility commissioning. The position requires the ability to work effectively across geographies and scale laboratory teams in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and optimize polymer–Karbohm composites for structural material applications.
  • Conduct detailed characterization and analysis of composite materials, including mechanical, thermal, and structural performance testing.
  • Document findings, prepare technical reports, and contribute to publications and presentations.
  • Lead planning and execution of compounding laboratory setup projects.
  • Oversee equipment sourcing, procurement, installation, and commissioning.
  • Recruit, train, and mentor laboratory team members to ensure high performance and skill development.
  • Foster cross-functional collaboration with research teams, industry partners, and international collaborators.
  • Coordinate work across multiple geographies to meet project objectives and deadlines.
  • Manage project timelines, budgets, and resources efficiently.
  • Adapt and scale laboratory operations in response to evolving project needs and a dynamic research environment.
Job Requirements

  • Specialization in plastic compounding, carbon fibre reinforcement, and nanomaterials (graphene and 2D materials is a plus).
  • Experience in recycled plastics is a plus.
  • Specialization in aerogel is a plus.
  • In-depth understanding of high-performance polymers such as TR90, rPC, and acetate alternatives.
  • 10+ years in advanced materials R&D, ideally with industrial experience.
  • Proven success in developing and scaling composite materials for industrial applications.
  • Experience leading compounding laboratory setup projects, including team building, equipment sourcing, and facility commissioning.
  • Experience in strong cross-functional collaboration with production, engineering, and supply chain teams.
  • Expertise in polymer processing, extrusion, compounding, and thermal/mechanical characterization.
  • Familiarity with laboratory equipment, including twin-screw extruders, UTM, DMA, SEM, and AI-based formulation tools.
  • Strong understanding of ISO, FDA, and REACH compliance.
  • Critical and strategic thinker with a hacker mindset.
  • Exceptional leadership and mentoring skills.
  • Mission-driven and passionate about sustainability and the circular economy.
