Job description

Primary Role:

The Radiographer uses X-rays, and other forms of imaging technology, such as Mammo, CT, MRI, Dexa and Fluoroscopy, to examine patients. He/she is responsible for acquiring the images. The primary purpose of the Radiographer is to provide information to diagnose patient illnesses by operating radiologic equipment to produce radiographs that are accurate and complete and in accordance to the policies and procedures of the hospital.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepares patient for radiological procedure by positioning patient; adjusting immobilization devices; moving equipment into specified position; adjusting equipment controls and to set exposure factors abiding by the ALARA principal. Also responsible for assessing patients and their clinical requirements to determine appropriate radiographic techniques.
  • Performs a range of radiographic examinations on patients to produce high-quality images.
  • Assists in more complex radiological examinations working with radiologists, doctors and surgeons for interventional procedures.
  • Provides support and reassurance to patients, taking into account their physical and psychological needs by gaining patient cooperation by reducing anxieties; providing explanations of treatment; answering questions.
  • Observe and maintain contact with patients during their waiting, examination and post-examination stay in the department.
  • Records imaging identification and patient documentation quickly and accurately by observing protocols to ensure compliance with patient confidentiality guidelines.
  • Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations also by understanding and observing health and safety at work and welfare issues. Minimizes radiation to patient and staff by practicing radiation protection techniques, using beam restrictive devices, patient shielding, and knowledge of exposure factors.
  • Ensures operation of radiology equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; maintaining equipment and supplies inventories; evaluating new equipment and techniques.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; participating in professional societies.
  • Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols; following drug protocols in case of reactions to drugs, such as contrast media.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications / Knowledge Requirements: Degrees, Licensure, and /or Certification

  • Radiography experience of at least 5 years: skilled in the use of medical technologies such a, MRI, CT, C-ARM, X-Ray and Mammo as well as performing diagnostic procedures.
  • Must be currently practicing or licensed as a Radiographer, and in good standing at an accredited healthcare entity/hospital in any of the eligible medical jurisdictions: Jamaica/Caribbean, USA, United Kingdom, Canada, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia.
  • Basic Life Support Provider Certification.
  • High proficiency in all program components of Microsoft Office.
  • Demonstrated skills in written and spoken communication.
  • Excellent telephone manner and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to operate independently, within the confines of the policies and procedures of the hospital.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently under pressure in a stressful environment.
  • Cover the radiology reception at the time of busy, schedule the patient’s appointment, send and scan the radiology reports.

Accountability:

The Radiographer will be accountable to the Imaging Manager with secondary reporting lines to his/her designate.
