Job description

The Project Manager for the Large Scale Solar in Malaysia will oversee all aspects of the development and execution of large scale solar power projects, from planning and design to construction and commissioning. The role requires a skilled leader who can manage project teams, stakeholders, and contractors to construct, commission and deliver solar energy projects on time, within budget, and to the highest standards of quality and safety.

Project Leadership & Coordination:

  • Lead the planning, construction and timely delivery of a large scale solar power plant, ensuring all activities align with project objectives.
  • Oversee day-to-day project operations, managing schedules, resources, budgets, and risks to meet project deadlines.
  • Coordinate and manage cross-functional teams (engineering, procurement, construction, etc.) to ensure smooth execution of development and construction activities.

Project Execution and Delivery:

  • Oversee daily project operations, ensuring adherence to timelines, budgets, and quality standards.
  • Lead the coordination of engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning activities for the solar power plant, substations, and grid connection infrastructure.
  • Manage, monitor and report on progress, performance, and risks, ensuring early identification and mitigation of potential issues.

Stakeholder Management:

  • Act as the primary point of contact for all stakeholders, including government agencies, regulatory bodies, landowners, local communities, engineering consultants and project partners.
  • Engage with stakeholders to ensure alignment and address concerns, while promoting a positive image for the project and the organization.
  • Negotiate contracts and manage relationships with contractors, suppliers, and service providers.

Financial Management:

  • Prepare, manage, and monitor project budgets, ensuring effective cost control and the identification of potential savings.
  • Review and approve all financial documentation related to the project, including contracts, change orders, and invoices.
  • Provide regular project financial reports and forecasts to senior management.

Health, Safety, and Environmental Compliance:

  • Ensure that all project activities comply with relevant health, safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Implement and monitor safety programs to minimize risks during construction and operations.
  • Oversee the implementation of environmental and social management plans and work to ensure the project complies with required environmental standards.

Risk Management:

  • Identify and report on project risks and develop strategies to mitigate potential impacts.
  • Implement and maintain a risk register, conducting regular risk assessments and ensuring the team is aware of potential challenges.

Team Leadership and Development:

  • Manage, mentor, and guide a multidisciplinary project team, ensuring that all team members understand their roles and responsibilities.
  • Conduct regular project team meetings to review progress, address challenges, and ensure effective collaboration.
  • Foster a positive and productive work environment that encourages continuous learning and professional development.

Reporting and Documentation:

  • Ensure accurate and timely reporting to senior management on project status, risks, and milestones.
  • Maintain detailed project documentation, including contracts, change orders, permits, and design documents.

Team Management & Development:

  • Manage and mentor the project team, fostering a collaborative and productive work environment.
  • Organize and lead regular team meetings to discuss progress, address issues, and align on goals.

Procurement & Contract Management:

  • Oversee the procurement process for equipment, materials, and services related to the power project.
  • Review and manage contracts with vendors, suppliers, and subcontractors, ensuring terms and conditions are met.

Site Management & Construction Oversight:

  • Supervise construction activities, ensuring work is completed according to specifications, on time, and within budget. · Conduct site inspections and monitor construction progress, ensuring safety protocols are followed.

Environmental & Social Impact Management:

  • Ensure that environmental and social management plans are carried out, and mitigate any potential adverse effects.
  • Work with local communities and other stakeholders to manage any potential conflicts or concerns during the construction phase.

Technology & Innovation Monitoring:

  • Stay updated on the latest trends and advancements in solar energy technology and project management methodologies.
  • Apply best practices and innovative solutions to optimize the efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability of the renewable energy project.

Contractor and Vendor Relationship Management:

  • Manage relationships with third-party contractors, vendors, and service providers, ensuring that all contractual obligations are met.
  • Monitor performance and quality of work done by external contractors and suppliers.

Post-Project Evaluation & Handover:

  • Support the commissioning and handover process after project completion, ensuring that the operational team is fully prepared to manage the project post handover.
  • Lead post-project evaluations to capture lessons learned and best practices for future projects.

Qualifications/Experiences

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (preferably Electrical, Civil, Mechanical) or related fields. A Master’s degree in Project Management or Renewable Energy is a plus.
  • Certification in Project Management
  • Minimum of 5–7 years of experience in project management, with at least 3 years of experience managing construction of large-scale renewable energy projects or other complex infrastructure, preferably with solar power plants.
  • Proven experience in managing projects in the ASEAN region and in Malaysia.
  • Based in Malaysia, with occasional travel to project sites.
  • Must be comfortable working in outdoor and construction site environments.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Flexibility to manage changing priorities and project scope.
  • Experience in managing cross-functional teams and working with international stakeholders.
