Job description

At CPI (KL), we’re looking for an experienced plastic injection mould designer that is going to design high quality, robust and manufacturable plastic injection moulds with a strong focus on precision plastic parts, multi cavity moulds and moulds with hot runner systems. Your core competencies in tool design and troubleshooting of tooling problems will help us design to achieve precision tolerances with special measures during tool design and simulations to mitigate problems.

Responsibilities

New Moulds Design

  • Design new injection moulds to produce plastic components that meet product specifications – using precision tolerance groups as per ISO 20457 as a guide.
  • Understand customer drawings/ requirements à dimensions and tolerances.
  • Participate in DFM and DFMEA discussions feasibility issues are addressed before tooling fabrication.
  • Do mould design studies and be able to calculate bill of materials for the tooling.
  • Propose special processing measures and tooling design measures to achieve precision tolerance group. à feedback into request for quotation and DFM stage.
  • Collaborate with product design engineers (customer/NPD), manufacturing, tooling and QA teams to ensure manufacturability of new designs.
  • Participate in Kick off meetings for new tooling after receiving PO from customer.
  • Oversee the tooling process from concept through till fabrication à Project Manage the tooling schedules/ execution.

Tooling optimisation and Renewal

  • To support engineering changes (ECR/ECN) and tooling renewals.
  • To study tooling life extension and refurbishment when we have revised volume expectations on tools and when we optimise production parameters internally.
  • Investigate defects trouble shoot issues with view to increasing mould life and reducing repairs including scheduling tooling preventive maintenance.
  • Review appearance & dimensional report and analyse the NG (Not Good) root cause by tooling defects.
Qualifications
  • A degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Tool & Die Making, or a related field with CGPA: 3.0 and above.
  • Expertise in injection moulding tooling designing with 2 to 4 years of experience.
  • Familiar with SolidWorks, Design for Manufacturing (DFM) & Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Prior experience in designing moulds.
  • Plastic Mouldflow or Moldex 3D and flow simulations/CFD
  • To be familiar with Simulation tools Moldex and Solidworks plastics to conduct feasibility studies.
