Job summary

KPJ Healthcare is seeking a Medical Assistant for the Accident & Emergency unit to provide professional nursing care and assist in coordinating ward activities. You will follow hospital policies and ensure smooth handovers and patient progress reporting.

The role requires strong interpersonal skills, bilingual communication, and readiness to work shift duties, including weekends and public holidays. Prior Medical Assistant experience is preferred in a busy hospital setting.

Qualifications

  • Certificate/Diploma in Medical Assistant.
  • Post Basic qualification in related field.
  • Bachelor of Nursing/ Medical Assistant.
  • Registered with Lembaga Pembantu Perubatan Malaysia with a valid license to practice as a Medical Assistant.
  • Medical Assistant with 1 year experience.
  • Able to write and communicate in Bahasa Malaysia and English Language.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Performing professional nursing care to patient.
  • Direct supervision and co-ordination of the activities in the allocated unit / ward, in line with the Policies and Procedures of Nursing Services.
  • Responsible to keep Unit Manager informed of any incidents or reportable situations that need nursing administrative involvement.
SUMMARY OF DUTIES
  • Responsible for rendering professional nursing care to patients within an assigned unit of the hospital.
  • Such nursing care is an integral part of the individualized holistic patient care plan as directed by the Medical staff according to the Policies and Procedures of the hospital and in keeping with the generally accepted principles, policies and procedures of the Nursing Services.
JOB DESCRIPTION
  • Understands and carries out the nursing care in line with Vision and Mission Statements, Goals and Objectives that suit the scope of the Nursing Services.
  • Works shift duties or as assigned by Unit Manager according to Unit’s Operational Hours.
  • Informs Unit Manager when change occurs in circumstances which affect standards of care.
  • Receives and handover report of patient, knows the case in detail:
  • Progress of the patient.
  • Ensures all doctors’ orders are carried out before shift change and on taking over case.
  • Any incident or problems encountered.
  • Visits every patient in the unit together with the team members on taking over of duties to:
  • Assess condition of patient, compare with report.
  • To provide knowledge to all staff.
  • To ensure all scheduled meetings are carried out.
  • To plan budget with justification.
  • To maintain statistic and records.
  • To participate with other committees.
  • To evaluate policy and procedure related to PCI.
  • To provide information materials.
  • Re-plan nursing care according to assessment or evaluation.
  • Determines nursing priorities and plans patient care according to patient’s needs and staff availability.
  • Provides individualized holistic care to patients using the Nursing Process approach with proper nursing documentation in patients files and that it is contemporaneous.
  • Reports all abnormal findings and progress of patients to the relevant doctors / consultants.
  • Conducts regular nursing rounds on all patients in the ward / zone to ascertain for other additional needs; talk to patient/family members as an integral part of providing emotional support.
  • Follows doctors / consultants ward round and assists them in doing procedures when required.
  • Carries out orders of doctors / consultants pertaining to care of patients and delegates to other team members according to their assignments.
  • Liaises and discusses with the relevant doctors / consultants with regards to care of patients in the unit / ward.
  • Establishes and develops effective communication with all disciplines, patients and relatives, to achieve optimal patient’ satisfaction.
  • Attends and participates in unit meetings, dialogue sessions and hospital’s activities.
  • Participates in the health education of patients and their families in the ward.
  • Assists the Unit Manager in the administration of the unit / wards when assigned as shift nurse in charge.
  • Acts on behalf of the Unit Manager in setting standards and expectations in the quality of care.
  • Carries out duties and responsibilities of the Unit Manager in her absence as directed.
  • Ensure charges of equipment/consumable items into patient’s charges accordingly and checked for completeness.
  • Responsible for checking and documenting supply of sterile packs from CSSS and weekly checking for integrity of packaging.
  • Maintains and documents adequate supply of unit stock.
  • Carries out assignments scheduled by Unit Manager and provide feedback.
HUMAN RESOURCE AND DEVELOPMENT
  • Takes personal responsibility for own professional development and keeps up to date with professional change and growth by maintaining mandatory learning hours.
  • Participates in the teaching program of the unit / ward and orientation of new members of staff to the ward routine.
  • Involves in the supervision of the lower categories of staff:
  • Student nurses who are posted to the unit for their clinical experience and assist them to achieve their objectives of that clinical attachment.
  • Attend 30 hours of CNE per year
  • Training of new members/ student in mentor mentee program/ preceptor
  • Participate in monitor staff performance; identify strengths, areas for improvement and learning needs.
POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
  • Formulate, enforce, revise and evaluate guidelines/policies of PCI regularly and ensure it is accessible to all staff.
  • Monitor compliance with infection control policies, inclusive of activities directly associated with audit.
  • Participate in accepted Infection control requirement for building construction and renovation.
  • Ensure all new equipment conforms to accepted Infection control Standards.
  • Develop and update isolation techniques and procedures in accordance with current standards of practice, rules and regulations.
  • Ensure all policies and procedures of Integrated Management System (IMS), and/or Hospital Accreditation are adhered to and records maintained, if and when these programs are implemented.
  • To ensure compliance to the policies and procedures.
  • To perform audit to ensure compliance.
  • To provide safe working environment.
  • To monitor Infection control requirements are adhered to.
  • To ensure all new equipment’s are up to the PCI standards prior use.
  • To maintain isolation techniques and procedures at all time.
FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT
  • Ensure adequate and proper utilization of space and equipment for patient management and staff.
  • Ensure all medical devices shall comply with the manufacturers’ instruction on PCI Ensure no recycling of any disposables medical surgical instruments / equipment.
  • Ensure compliance to regulatory requirements for isolation facilities.
  • To ensure all medical devices are safe to use.
  • To ensure no reuse of single use items.
  • To ensure compliance for isolation requirements.
SAFETY AND QUALITY IMPROVEMENT ACTIVTIES
  • Ensure availability of planned and systematic safety and quality improvement activity.
  • Conduct planned and systematic surveillance using infection control criteria.
  • Ensure indicator reports are available with tracking and trending.
  • Ensure appropriate action on all emerging and reemerging diseases are taken and reported to relevant authority.
  • Assess environmental health according to the standards of Infection Control.
  • Participate in sharp injuries investigation and prevention activities.
  • Collect data on the incidence of selected device use in intensive care unit.
  • Participate in investigations of unusual hospital infection outbreak utilizing the microbiology laboratory, consultation with Infection Control Chairman and when necessary in consultation with Ministry of Health.
  • Report findings of investigations to appropriate authorities in accordance with the Infection Control Policy and Procedures.
AUDIT
  • Plan and organize audit schedule program for the year.
  • Carry out audits conforms to criteria set for infection control and best practice.
  • Participate in clinical programs and provide relevant results to area concerned and nursing management team.
  • To ensure QIA is implemented completely.
  • To perform systematic surveillance.
  • To perform tracking and trending for the data collected.
  • To ensure all infectious cases are managed well.
  • To monitor events of sharp injuries.
  • To keep track with device related infection.
  • To ensure appropriate actions are taken to contain outbreaks.
  • To ensure preventive measures are implemented as needed.
  • To ensure audits are performed as planned.
  • To perform audits related to PCI.
  • To involve in clinical activities.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Participate in any new services that are introduced by the organization.
  • Ensure conformance to all policies and procedures of Integrated Management System (IMS) and Malaysian Hospital Accreditation Standards.
  • Comply with the Baby Friendly Hospital requirements and adhere to the 10 steps of successful breastfeeding.
  • Participate in 5S activities and comply with the specified requirements.
  • Assist committee to develop and implement services policy and procedures, quality assurance activities such as Patient Satisfactory Questionnaires, QCC, Integrated Management System (IMS), and etc.
  • Ensure the policies on patients and family’s rights are addressed at all times.
  • Ensure compliance to Patient safety goals as safety improvement measures recommended by World Alliance for Patient Safety (2008) Perform any other duties assigned by the CEO.
  • To carried out duties as an employee as stipulated in Occupational Safety and Health Act and Regulations 1994.
  • Conformance to all policies and procedures Hospital Accreditation requirements.
  • Responsible and accountable to carry out Baby Friendly Hospital requirements and adhere to the steps of successful breastfeeding as directed by the Management.

Qualification Required:
Minimum
  • Certificate/Diploma in Medical Assistant.
Preferred
  • Post Basic qualification in related field.

Experience Required:
Minimum
  • Registered with Lembaga Pembantu Perubatan Malaysia with a valid license to practice as a Medical Assistant.
  • Medical Assistant with 1 year experience.
  • Able to write and communicate in Bahasa Malaysia and English Language.
Preferred

  • Willingness to work on scheduled hours, shift, and weekends, public holidays, on-call and anytime when called during emergency.
