Job summary

LexisNexis is seeking a Legal Counsel in Malaysia to support North Asia businesses (Japan and Korea) and global product lines. The role reports to the Head of Legal – Asia and collaborates with APAC, US and Europe teams, delivering practical, commercially minded advice.

The successful candidate will have at least 5 years PQE, be fluent in English, with potential Japanese language proficiency, and be comfortable handling a broad range of commercial, IT/IP, and regulatory matters in a fast-paced

Qualifications

  • Qualified lawyer in Malaysia or another recognised common law jurisdiction.
  • Minimum 5+ years PQE.
  • Experience in commercial, corporate, litigation or IT/IP law.
  • Strong drafting & negotiating skills.
  • Ability to work autonomously.
  • Strong stakeholder management and influencing skills.
  • Requires business-level English. Japanese language proficiency is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice which is timely, accurate, concise, useful and protects the interests of the business.
  • Understand the business policies, compliance obligations and risk appetite, and apply that knowledge in providing advice.
  • Monitor and advise on relevant legal, regulatory and policy developments, proactively identify legal and regulatory risks, and recommend practical, risk-based solutions.
  • Participate in Legal Department planning sessions and work diligently, as part of the team, to achieve the Legal Department's strategic objectives including compliance goals.
  • Deliver training to business and conducts legal clinics.
  • Individual contributor role with leadership through influence.
  • Provides trusted legal guidance to business stakeholders, fostering sound decision-making and promoting compliance, integrity, and commercial best practice.
  • Managing business expectations and multiple high priorities with short lead times.
  • Working with other business units and departments who have different priorities and needs.
  • Working with outsourced partners to resolve issues.
  • Balancing legal risk management with commercial objectives in a fast-moving business environment.
  • Advising on a broad range of matters, including contractual, technology, intellectual property, content, regulatory and dispute-related issues.
  • Advising on government and public sector tenders and procurement processes, often within short timeframes and with significant legal, commercial, and compliance considerations.
  • Escalating material legal, regulatory, financial or reputational risks to the Head of Legal – Asia where appropriate.

About The Role

The Legal Counsel role directly reports to the Head of Legal – Asia, the Legal Counsel. The role focuses on legal support for North Asia businesses, particularly Japan and Korea, Global product lines; and Overflow legal work across Asia.

The Legal Counsel is expected to work closely with business clients to provide high quality, practical, commercially focused and independent legal advice and services (in accordance with company policies, as well as applicable ethical and professional standards). The Legal Counsel proactively escalates significant matters and ensures that the Head of Legal - Asia is aware of material legal considerations affecting the business. The role also collaborates with and assists other legal personnel across APAC, the US and Europe, as well as across other group entities.

Requirements
  • Qualified lawyer in Malaysia or another recognised common law jurisdiction

  • Previous experience in a law firm or an in‑house legal department
  • Experience in commercial, corporate, litigation or IT/IP law
  • Sound legal and commercial acumen
  • Strong drafting & negotiating skills
  • Ability to work autonomously
  • Team player/ willingness to develop new skills
  • Interest in and openness to developing AI fluency and leveraging technology to enhance legal service delivery
  • Strong stakeholder management and influencing skills
  • Requires business‑level English. Japanese language proficiency is preferred.
