We are seeking a meticulous and proactive Legal and Compliance Officer to join our team. This role is crucial in supporting our legal and compliance functions, particularly in managing contracts, advising on regulatory matters, and ensuring our operations align with legal requirements. Fluency in Mandarin is essential, as the successful candidate will be regularly communicating with stakeholders based in China and reviewing Mandarin-language legal documents and regulations.

Job Overview

We are seeking a meticulous and proactive Legal and Compliance Officer to join our team. This role is crucial in supporting our legal and compliance functions, particularly in managing contracts, advising on regulatory matters, and ensuring our operations align with legal requirements. Fluency in Mandarin is essential, as the successful candidate will be regularly communicating with stakeholders based in China and reviewing Mandarin-language legal documents and regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Draft, review, structure, and negotiate a wide range of commercial agreements (e.g., NDAs, leases, service contracts).
  2. Coordinate with internal stakeholders and clients to facilitate contract negotiations and address legal queries.
  3. Provide legal advice on day-to-day business operations, dispute resolution, and risk exposure.
  4. Implement and maintain an efficient contract management system.
  5. Conduct legal research and monitor regulatory changes, especially in recruitment and real estate sectors.
  6. Advise on employment law, data privacy, AML, intellectual property, and cybersecurity compliance.
  7. Draft and maintain internal compliance policies and procedures.
  8. Perform due diligence (KYC, AML/CFT), customer screening, and transaction monitoring.
  9. Escalate non-compliance issues and collaborate with legal, audit, and operations teams.
  10. Deliver internal legal and compliance training as needed.
  11. Prepare internal and external compliance reports and ensure audit readiness.
  12. Support legal assessments of new business ventures and identify legal risks.

Requirements:

  1. Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and admission to the bar.
  2. 3–5 years of relevant post-qualification experience in legal, compliance, or regulatory roles.
  3. Must have litigation experience.
  4. Fluency in Mandarin (spoken and written) is mandatory due to direct dealings with Chinese stakeholders.
  5. Strong command of English and Malay.
  6. Experience in real estate, financial services, or multinational companies is preferred.
  7. AML/CFT certification is an added advantage.
  8. Proven ability to think critically, interpret laws, and apply them practically.
  9. Able to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Additional Preferences:

  1. Mandarin-speaker candidate preferred to facilitate seamless communication with China-based clients and regulators.
  2. Prior corporate in-house legal experience is a plus.
