About the Role
The Legal Advisor will be responsible for independently delivering day-to-day legal and commercial services to the Boustead Geospatial Group’s (BGG) Malaysian operations including Esri Malaysia and Boustead Geospatial Technologies, in a pragmatic and commercially sound manner, ensuring that legal and commercial risks are effectively managed, regulatory obligations are met, and strategic objectives are supported.
What you'll do:
- Serves as the primary point of contact for legal and commercial issues in Malaysia.
- Drafting, reviewing and undertaking the negotiation process of a broad range of commercial agreements, including sales, vendor, procurement, license, non-disclosure, referral, partnership, service and various other agreements.
- Providing opinion or recommendation on wide-ranging legal and commercial issues relating to the business, including issues such as transactional and commercial law, licensing, litigation and/or disputes, data privacy and protection, regulatory and intellectual property. You will work directly with the cross-functional departments to provide on-the-ground support and identify potential legal issues.
- Support the company implementation of the data privacy/protection regime, including:
- Advising on changes in laws, and taking a leading role in BGG policy development
- Being a Privacy Data Officer, and
- Participating in the Privacy and Data Protection committee.
- Identifying and advising on issues and compliance risks.
- Collaborating and managing with external legal offices/consultants.
- Support local business strategies, goals and practices in alignment with Group strategies, programs and objectives.
- Carry out any other activities directed by the BGG Head of Legal and Commercial.
About You
We are seeking a seasoned Legal Advisor with strong business acumen and deep experience in commercial and legal matters to support our operations in Malaysia.
We believe that to be successful in this role you will need:
- Law, Business or Finance degree from a leading university with strong academic performance.
- Admitted or has previously held the right to practice in Malaysia, with at least 5 years relevant experience, ideally a combination of law firm or in-house roles, or can demonstrate highly developed contract analysis and drafting skills.
- A genuine interest in developing a career in a transactionally focused career that covers a wide range of areas of law, from commercial, intellectual property and privacy law.
- Experience acting as Privacy Officer and/or first point of contact for Privacy matters highly regarded.
- Sound knowledge of contractual practice, familiarity with contracting schemes for IT projects, public and private procurement (at all levels of government, through local authorities to federal agencies) would be well regarded.
- Pragmatic approach with the ability to strike a sensible and practical balance between legal risks and business objectives.
- Strong negotiation and risk management skills, able to operate at multiple levels including with customers, suppliers and other stakeholders.
- Must be able to effectively multi-task, manage time-sensitive documents and have exceptional organisational skills in a fast-paced environment.
- Must be able to collaborate effectively in a busy, team-oriented environment.
- Positive, motivated and resilient attitude with proven client engagement skills.
