Qualifications

• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• At least 2 years leading technical projects, mentoring engineers or technical leadership.
• Strong software architecture and engineering fundamentals.
• Experience with backend technologies (Node.js/TypeScript, Python, Go, or Java).
• Knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP).
• Experience with containers, automated testing and CI/CD.
• Experience building data-intensive applications, APIs or data pipelines.
• Strong SQL and data architecture understanding.
• Good written and spoken English for cross-country collaboration.
• Experience with modern TypeScript frontend development (Angular, TypeScript, RxJS, Ionic).
• Experience in IoT, embedded systems, time-series data, ML or edge AI is a plus.

Job description

An international technology company is expanding its technical and engineering capability in Penang, Malaysia.

This is a hands-on Lead Software Engineer / player-coach role for an experienced engineer who wants to remain deeply involved in designing and building production software while progressively taking technical ownership of a sophisticated software platform and helping grow the Malaysian engineering team.

You will work closely with senior technical leadership and collaborate daily with international firmware, hardware and engineering teams.

The role sits at the intersection of cloud software, industrial IoT, web and mobile applications, data and AI, offering significant technical ownership and the opportunity to influence architecture, engineering practices and future technology direction.

Key responsibilities

Own and evolve the software platform, including IoT device data pipelines, backend services and APIs, time-series data processing, web and mobile applications, cloud infrastructure and integrations, monitoring, diagnostics and fleet-management capabilities

Turn raw sensor data into reliable, actionable information for industrial users

Develop and maintain modern web and cross-platform mobile applications used for sensor commissioning, configuration and diagnostics, device monitoring, fleet management, troubleshooting and maintenance

Work closely with embedded firmware engineers on end-to-end device-to-cloud architecture, including wireless connectivity, BLE tooling, device provisioning, OTA/DFU workflows, fleet diagnostics, security and device lifecycle management

Help industrialise AI and data-driven functionality across the platform, including time-series analytics and anomaly detection, vibration and acoustic classification, predictive diagnostics, edge AI / TinyML deployment and integration of ML models into production applications

Own software quality end-to-end through architecture and design reviews, code reviews, automated testing, CI/CD, observability, documentation and release management

Recruit and mentor software engineers, establish engineering practices, contribute to architecture and tooling decisions and help develop the local engineering culture

Contribute directly to the technology roadmap alongside senior technical leadership

About you

7+ years of professional software engineering experience

At least 2 years leading technical projects, mentoring engineers or working as a Technical Lead

Strong software architecture and engineering fundamentals

Solid backend engineering experience using technologies such as Node.js/TypeScript, Python, Go or Java

Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure or GCP

Experience with containers, automated testing and CI/CD

Experience building data-intensive applications, APIs or data pipelines

Strong understanding of SQL and modern data architectures

Good written and spoken English with the ability to collaborate across countries and time zones

Experience with modern TypeScript frontend development, including Angular, TypeScript, RxJS and Ionic

Experience across IoT, embedded-connected systems, industrial technology, time-series data, machine learning or edge AI would be highly regarded.
