Job summary

UNITED BC TEAM SDN BHD in Penang is seeking a seasoned Mechanical Design Lead to oversee a team in developing customised automated machinery using SolidWorks, owning concepts through final machine completion. You will guide design development, ensure GD&T, drawings, BOMs, and maintain standards while planning tasks, managing risks and ensuring on-time delivery of projects.

The ideal candidate holds a Diploma/Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechatronics with 8+ years of hands-on SolidWorks

Qualifications

• Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering or a related discipline.
• Minimum 8 years of relevant experience in mechanical design and automated machinery development, with prior experience leading or supervising a design team.
• Strong hands-on proficiency in SolidWorks, including 3D modelling, 2D engineering drawings and assembly design.
• Proven experience in designing customised automated machinery, industrial equipment or mechanical systems.
• Strong knowledge of mechanical components, materials, fabrication, machining, assembly processes and engineering tolerances.
• Able to independently review and verify 2D part drawings, assembly cross-section drawings, module BOMs and detailed engineering documentation.
• Good understanding of GD&T, tolerance indication, engineering drawing standards and design for manufacturing and assembly (DFMA).
• Proven ability to manage multiple design projects, allocate resources and ensure timely project delivery.
• Strong technical problem-solving, analytical and decision-making skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead and oversee the mechanical design team in developing customised automated machinery and equipment using SolidWorks.
• Take ownership of mechanical design concepts, technical proposals and design development from initial concept through to final machine completion.
• Provide technical guidance and solutions for complex mechanical design challenges.
• Review, verify and approve mechanical designs, 3D models, 2D assembly drawings, part drawings and module BOMs before submission or release.
• Ensure drawings contain accurate dimensions, tolerances, material specifications and technical details to support fabrication, machining and assembly.
• Establish and maintain consistent mechanical design standards, drawing practices, documentation and SolidWorks procedures across the team.
• Plan, allocate and monitor design tasks according to project priorities, manpower availability and delivery schedules.
• Identify design risks, technical issues and potential delays, and take corrective action to minimise project impact.
• Lead the investigation and resolution of mechanical design issues during fabrication, assembly, machine setup and testing.
• Oversee mechanical design support during machine assembly, installation, testing, commissioning and equipment buyoff.
