Job description

Position Summary

GeoMark Research SDN BHD is establishing a new laboratory in Kuala Lumpur and is seeking a reliable, hands-on Laboratory Technician to support general day-to-day laboratory operations. This is an entry-level to early-career position suited for someone who is organized, careful with samples, willing to learn, and comfortable helping with a wide range of laboratory tasks as needed.

Because this is a new and growing laboratory, the role will involve a variety of responsibilities rather than one limited assignment. The current workload is expected to be manageable for one person, but the successful candidate should be flexible, practical, and willing to support different areas of the lab as work develops.

This position is ideal for someone who wants to gain broad laboratory experience in a startup lab environment while supporting sample handling, preparation, inventory management, basic oil and cutting preparation, lab safety, and general lab operations.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

Sample Receiving and Handling

  • Receive incoming client samples and verify sample information against submission paperwork.

  • Label, organize, and track samples according to internal procedures.

  • Maintain accurate records of sample receipt, movement, storage, and disposal.

  • Handle oil, rock, cutting, and other geologic or laboratory samples carefully to preserve sample integrity.

  • Assist with sample packaging, storage, retrieval, and internal transfers.

Sample Preparation

  • Wash and prepare drill cuttings or other geologic materials as directed.

  • Assist with drying, sieving, sorting, weighing, and organizing samples.

  • Prepare oil samples for GC-related workflows under supervision.

  • Assist with basic laboratory preparation tasks using approved methods and safety procedures.

  • Maintain clean and organized sample preparation areas.

Inventory and Laboratory Organization

  • Help maintain sample inventory and ensure samples are stored in the correct locations.

  • Keep laboratory supplies, consumables, containers, labels, and tools organized.

  • Notify the Lab Director when supplies, gases, solvents, or consumables need to be reordered.

  • Support basic laboratory housekeeping and organization to maintain an efficient working environment.

  • Assist with shipping, receiving, and general logistical support as needed.

Equipment, Gas, and General Lab Support

  • Assist with routine laboratory setup, cleaning, and maintenance tasks.

  • Change or help change laboratory gas cylinders following proper safety procedures.

  • Monitor gas cylinder levels, regulators, and related lab utilities as directed.

  • Support basic equipment checks and notify the Lab Director of any issues.

  • Help maintain a safe, clean, and functional laboratory workspace.

Safety and Compliance

  • Follow all laboratory safety procedures, including PPE requirements, chemical handling rules, and safe sample handling practices.

  • Work safely with solvents, gases, glassware, cutting materials, and laboratory tools.

  • Read and follow Safety Data Sheets when handling chemicals or solvents.

  • Maintain good housekeeping practices to reduce spills, contamination, and safety risks.

  • Report spills, incidents, equipment issues, or unsafe conditions promptly to the Lab Director.

What This Role Is Not

This is a general laboratory operations role, not a senior scientist or interpretation role. The Laboratory Technician will not be expected to independently interpret geochemical data, manage client communications, or operate advanced analytical instruments without proper training and supervision.

However, the person in this role should be eager to learn, dependable, and willing to grow as the Kuala Lumpur laboratory develops.

Qualifications

Required

  • Reliable, punctual, and detail-oriented.

  • Comfortable performing hands-on laboratory and sample preparation tasks.

  • Willing to assist with a wide variety of tasks in a new lab environment.

  • Able to follow written procedures and verbal instructions carefully.

  • Good working English communication skills.

  • Ability to safely lift, move, and organize sample containers, boxes, and gas cylinders with proper procedures.

  • Strong commitment to laboratory safety and sample integrity.

Preferred

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Geology, Petroleum Geoscience, Laboratory Technology, or a related field.

  • Previous laboratory experience, especially in sample preparation, geologic materials, petroleum samples, or chemical handling.

  • Familiarity with laboratory safety practices, PPE, SDS documents, and basic chemical handling.

  • Bahasa Malaysia language skills.

  • Experience with sample inventory systems, spreadsheets, labeling, or laboratory tracking processes.

Desired Personal Attributes

The ideal candidate will be:

  • Practical and hands-on.

  • Organized and careful with details.

  • Flexible and willing to help where needed.

  • Comfortable working in a small, growing laboratory.

  • Safety-conscious.

  • Trainable and eager to learn.

  • Able to work independently once trained.

  • Not above routine tasks such as cleaning, washing samples, organizing supplies, or moving cylinders.

  • Interested in growing with the company as the laboratory expands.

Work Environment

This role is based in GeoMark Research SDN BHD’s Kajang laboratory. The laboratory is in an early stage of development, so the successful candidate should be comfortable working in a startup-style environment where priorities may shift and employees may need to support multiple areas of the operation.

The position will involve routine laboratory work, sample handling, solvent and chemical awareness, gas cylinder handling, general lab organization, and support for oil and geologic sample preparation workflows.

About GeoMark Research SDN BHD

GeoMark Research SDN BHD is part of GeoMark Research’s continued expansion of geochemical laboratory services. The laboratory will support petroleum geochemistry, sample preparation, and related laboratory services for regional clients, with technical support and standards aligned with GeoMark’s broader laboratory operations.
