Responsibilities

• Microscopic screening of gynecological and non-gynecological smears and cell blocks; prepare concise reports describing findings and conclusions.
• Routinely stock and manage Fine Needle Aspiate service areas; review patient history, complete requisitions, prepare and stain slides; assist cytopathologist with preliminary diagnosis.
• Collect and evaluate quality control data from laboratory information systems; assist in daily, weekly and monthly QA activities.
• Establish and maintain inventory and ordering system for all supplies; apply asset management principles to maintain supplies.
• Receive and accession cytology specimens; process gynecological specimens; prepare body fluids; stain and prepare slides; maintain instruments and quality control procedures; prepare reagents and stains; perform initial evaluation on toluidine blue stained slides; prepare cell blocks from non-gynecologic material.
• Perform other duties as requested.

Job description

A. Microscopic screening of LBC, conventional Pap smears, and body fluids

• Make independent diagnostic evaluations during microscopic screening of gynecological and non-gynecological smears and cell blocks
• Prepare a concise report of each sample, describing microscopic findings and conclusions in accepted terminology
• Determine the adequacy and quality of samples submitted for evaluation
• Responsible for rendering and reporting out final interpretations on negative gynecologic specimens
• Rescreen designated quality control and high-risk specimens in accordance with regulatory requirements and established laboratory procedures.
• Accurately record workload information for subsequent analysis by the manager/supervisor

B. Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) Service

• Routinely stocks supply in all Fine Needle Aspirate service areas
• Assists at Fine Needle Aspirate’s by reviewing patient clinical history, completing requisition forms, preparing and staining slides
• Provides microscopic adequacy assessment to physicians and provides assistance to the cytopathologist in determining preliminary diagnosis
• Advise medical staff in appropriate specimen triage and collection procedures, as needed
• Participate in “Fine Needle Aspirate team” to develop and update procedures for continued improvement of the Fine Needle Aspirate service

C. Assist in the collection of quality assurance data

• Retrieve all appropriate quality control data from the laboratory information system
• Assist in the collection and evaluation of quality control data on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis

D. Inventory Control and Supply Ordering

• Establish and maintain an inventory and ordering system for all supplies
• Utilize principles of asset management in maintaining supplies

E. Cytopreparation Duties

• Receive and accession cytology specimens
• Process Gynecological specimens according to established protocols
• Select appropriate preparation procedures for body fluids
• Stain and prepare slides for microscopic evaluation
• Maintain instruments and perform quality control proceduresPrepare and maintain processing reagents and stains
• Prepare and perform initial evaluation on Toluidine Blue stained wet film slides on body fluids for high-risk staining assessment
• Prepare cell blocks from non-gynecologic material per procedure protocols
