OUR JOURNEY
HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
Founded by the late Mr. Toh Sue Bee in 1977. The Group started off as a trading entity, with an average turnover ranging from USD 400,000 to USD 1.2 million annually.
In 1988, SB Group gradually expanded from an import and distribution business to a large-scale manufacturing entity of self-adhesive tapes. In its subsequent phases of growth, SB Group successfully reaped the results of its R&D efforts and was able to organize resources, manufacturing expertise and marketing strategy for its entry into direct manufacturing.
By 1995, SB Group was able to achieve a position of leadership and recognition for its quality in the ribbons and adhesive tapes industry in Malaysia and Asia. With its headquarter located in Kuala Lumpur as its regional hub.
FROM TRADING TO MANUFACTURING
In 1995, due to the groups rapid growth in turnover and export activity, SB Group went through an expansion program in order to cope with the group's increasing demand for manufacturing resources. The cornerstone of the expansion program was the opening of its own factory building with a built-up area of about 100,000 sq. feet. Apart from its emergence into a major industrial entity, the expansion helped propel SB Group into the ranks of leading industry players in Asia. The new plant employs state-of-the-art manufacturing technology and employs processes and quality standards that match the best in the industry.
In early 1999, the SB Group acquired the manufacturing assets and technical assistance of a leading tape producer for the electronics industry in Singapore which considerably enhanced the technical and product capabilities of the Group. With this acquisition, the Group is now capable of producing specialty products such as sequencer tapes, belting tapes, Kraft liner, carrier tapes, and heat-activated tapes.
ENVIRONMENTAL FRIENDLY ADHESIVES
In the 1990s, SB Group formulated the natural emulsion based adhesive, which is 100% odorless and environment-friendly. This rubber adhesive marks the fruition of almost 4 years of research collaboration with the National Rubber Research Institute of Malaysia and is now successfully used by the Group to produce the only environment-friendly masking tape in the world.
In 2011, SB Group invented the world's first Bio-degradable tapes that can biologically break down in active landfills within 3-5years . The constant green innovation in product development has been part of SB Group's core values in contributing to a greener world environment. Achievements such as this bear testimony to the capabilities and resourcefulness of not only the Group but also all Malaysians in general.
CORPORATE TRANSFORMATION PROGRAM (CTP)
While much has been achieved by the late founder, the challenges ahead are significant. Moving forward with the new leadership team, spearheaded by the late Mr. Toh Sue Bee’s eldest son, Mr. Toh Chee Hui (Group Managing Director), has set out the Group’s new Vision to be Asia No.1 OPP Tape Producer by the Year 2015 and World No.1 OPP tape Producer by the Year 2020.
In order to achieve the bold Vision of becoming Asia’s No.1 OPP Tape Producer by the Year 2015 and World No.1 OPP tape Producer by the Year 2020. SB Group embarked on a Corporate Transformation Program (CTP) to propel the Group to the Year 2020.
The CTP was introduced on May 18th 2011, as a new development strategy towards spearheading the Group towards the year 2020 which moves into an era of enhancing greater product positioning, manufacturing efficiency, employer and employee relationships and future business expansion plans.
OVERCOMING THE PANDEMIC
In March 2020 when the whole world was suddenly brought into a halt by Covid 19 pandemic, despite all the unexpected challenges and new norms during the movement control order (MCO) which restricted almost all kinds of face-to-face interaction, SB Group are proud to say that we immediately change our our traditional way of modus operandi to adapt to the situation to ensure consistent and smooth operations of the company.
Under the leadership of Managing Director, Mr Toh Chee Hui, the company deployed new health and safety policies such as installing disinfection tunnels, ensure daily sanitizing of the work place are being carried out, setting up our very own quarantine camp, implementing work from home policy for all office workers and many more. All these policies are done with one ultimate goal – “to be able to achieve greater height and at the same time ensure the safety of all its employee”.
BEYOND CTP
In January 2022, Ms Toh Mei Mei was officially appointed as the new CEO of SB Group. She have set a targeted greater vision “ To Be No. 1 Excellent Tape Manufacturer” to go beyond the CTP era. In order to achieve this, SB Group will be focusing in 4 Key Results Area, namely Product Excellence, Manufacturing Excellence, Customer Experience Excellence and Green Practices.
Today, SB Group is ranked as Asia’s leading manufacturers of adhesive tapes. With Kuala Lumpur as its headquarters, the group has also successfully established offices and manufacturing facilities in Indonesia and Vietnam. Today the group has a total workforce of more than 500 staffs across three countries with a turnover of more than RM 500million annually, with a global presence of products being exported across 60 countries around the globe.
Growth has been turbulent and challenging, exacting a heavy price on it's initial limited resources and infrastructure. SB Group's success largely reflects the strong willpower, determination and hard work of the founder and the subsequent leadership team that succeeded the company after the founders passing.
