Job summary

Western Digital Corporation seeks an Intern - Software Development (Embedded) to design, develop and test firmware for upcoming eHDD products. You will work in an Agile environment, contribute to data structures and drivers, and learn from mentors in a global R&D team.

You are a current student in Computer Science or Computer/Electronics Engineering with C/C++ and Python knowledge, eager to learn hardware-software integration, and capable of solving complex problems in a dynamic setting.

Qualifications

• Current student pursuing a Bachelor in Computer Science, Computer/Electronics Engineering or related field.
• Knowledge in C, Object-oriented programming (e.g. C++, Python), Data structures and Algorithms. Multi-threaded programming.
• Ability to rapidly learn new technologies, complex code and firmware/hardware systems.
• Self-motivated to work supervised or unsupervised as part of a team.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, integrate and maintain firmware for eHDD using unit tests, CI and Agile practices.
• Implement data structures, software algorithms, data path, and drivers for hardware cores with C++ and Python.
• Participate in technical investigations from problem statement to conclusions.
• Create design documents for firmware development and feature testing.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, learn new firmware and tools.

What We Do

We are focused on design and development of next generation firmware architecture and algorithms to deliver high performance and cost-efficient enterprise Hard Disk Drive (eHDD) products. As part of the globally diverse R&D team, you will be working in an Agile development environment with opportunity to learn and grow in multiple disciplines.

We are seeking highly motivated students to join our RAMP Internship Program. These paid internships are designed to jump start your career, offering on-the-job and supplemental training in addition to robust mentorship.You will work alongside the brightest minds in the industry to drive the innovation necessary to outpace new demands and challenges created bydata.

What is the RAMP Program?

The RAMP Program is supplemental to your day-to-day intern responsibilities. In this program, you will take a deeper dive into professional life at Western Digital by getting exposure to different parts of the organization. Some RAMP Program elements include:

• Networking events with other interns and Western Digital employees
• Collaboration opportunities with cross-geographical & cross-cultural teams especially the team in Japan & US.

This position is based in Western Digital Tech and Regional Center (M), which is a Center of Excellence located in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Design, develop, test, integrate and maintain quality firmware for eHDD using best practices like unit test, CI and Agile methodologies.
• Design and implementation of data structures, software algorithms, data path, and drivers for hardware cores using latest standards C++ and Python.
• Participate in significant technical investigations from problem statement to conclusions.
• Creates design documents pertinent to the various phases of firmware development.
• Devise strategies for in-depth functionality and compatibility testing of complex drive features.
• Current student, pursuing Bachelor in Computer Science, Computer/Electronics Engineering or related field.
• Knowledge in C, Object-oriented programming (e.g. C++, Python), Data Structure, Algorithms. Multi-threaded programming.
• Ability to rapidly learn new technologies, complex code.
• Capable of quickly learning new firmware, hardware, systems, tools, and methodologies.
• You have strong aptitude and penchant for problem solving, algorithm design, and complexity analysis.
• You have excellent interpersonal skills, including written and verbal communication.
• You are comfortable and enjoy working in a dynamic and ever evolving environment.
• You can be a fun and enthusiastic teammate who enjoys challenges and celebrates successes.
• Self-motivated to work both supervised and unsupervised as part of the team
• Would be an added advantage if you have:
• Knowledge in micro-controller architecture (ARM or ARC), embedded firmware development and RTOS.
• Knowledge in data analytics, data visualization, machine learning.
• Good understanding of Agile practices.
