Job summary

Western Digital in Malaysia invites applications for an Internship - Software Development (Embedded). Based at the Western Digital Tech and Regional Center (M) in Petaling Jaya, this program focuses on firmware architecture design and high-performance algorithms for eHDDs within an Agile team.

The Early Career track provides onboarding, mentorship, and structured development in a globally diverse environment.

Qualifications

• Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
• Knowledge of C, C++, Python, data structures and algorithms.
• Experience with multi-threaded programming and learning new firmware quickly.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, integrate and maintain firmware for eHDD using unit tests, CI, and Agile.
• Design data structures, algorithms, data paths and drivers for hardware cores in C++/Python.
• Participate in technical investigations from problem to conclusions.
• Create design documents for firmware development phases.
• Develop testing strategies for complex drive features.

Job Description

What We Do

We are focused on design and development of next generation firmware architecture and algorithms to deliver high performance and cost-efficient enterprise Hard Disk Drive (eHDD) products. As part of the globally diverse R&D team, you will be working in an Agile development environment with opportunity to learn and grow in multiple disciplines.

This position is based in Western Digital Tech and Regional Center (M), which is a Center of Excellence located in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia.

What You Will Do

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Design, develop, test, integrate and maintain quality firmware for eHDD using best practices like unit test, CI and Agile methodologies.
• Design and implementation of data structures, software algorithms, data path, and drivers for hardware cores using latest standards C++ and Python.
• Participate in significant technical investigations from problem statement to conclusions.
• Creates design documents pertinent to the various phases of firmware development.
• Devise strategies for in-depth functionality and compatibility testing of complex drive features.

This position is part of our Early Career program at WD. Our Early Career program is designed to support individuals beginning their professional career by providing the foundational training through a structured onboarding, mentorship, and development curriculum.

Qualifications

• Current student, pursuing Bachelor in Computer Science, Computer/Electronics Engineering or related field.
• Knowledge in C, Object-oriented programming (e.g. C++, Python), Data Structure, Algorithms. Multi-threaded programming.
• Ability to rapidly learn new technologies, complex code.
• Capable of quickly learning new firmware, hardware, systems, tools, and methodologies.
• You have strong aptitude and penchant for problem solving, algorithm design, and complexity analysis.
• You have excellent interpersonal skills, including written and verbal communication.
• You are comfortable and enjoy working in a dynamic and ever evolving environment.
• You can be a fun and enthusiastic teammate who enjoys challenges and celebrates successes.
• Self-motivated to work both supervised and unsupervised as part of the team.

Preferred Skills

• Knowledge in micro-controller architecture (ARM or ARC), embedded firmware development and RTOS.
• Knowledge in data analytics, data visualization, machine learning.

Skill

• Good understanding of Agile practices.
