Head of Finance (Furniture Retail Group)

We are a Funiture retail group seeking a Head of Finance, which is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing the full spectrum of financial management for a furniture retail group comprising a holding company and five subsidiaries (approximately RM100m in annual turnover). This role ensures effective group financial management, including consolidated reporting, budgeting and forecasting, cash flow management, compliance, and risk management. The Head of Finance will lead the finance department (including the General Ledger Manager and Accounts Payable/Accounts Receivable teams) to maintain strong internal controls and high accuracy in all financial processes. Additionally, this position oversees the integration and effective use of the company’s ERP system (covering Point-of-Sale, Warehouse Management System, and Accounting modules) and collaborates closely with the Internal Audit team to strengthen governance. The Head of Finance serves as a key advisor to the CEO and Board, providing strategic financial insights while managing day-to-day finance operations to support the company’s growth and stability.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management & Reporting: Oversee all financial operations and accounting functions of the group, ensuring timely and accurate preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual consolidated financial statements. Review and analyze financial results, providing insights and reports to the CEO and Board of Directors for informed decision-making.

-Inventory Financial Management: Oversee financial integrity of inventory across all subsidiaries: costing, valuation, stock movement tracking, and reconciliation with WMS and ERP. Monitor and report inventory turnover, stock aging, and stock obsolescence provisions. Lead monthly and annual stock count financial reconciliations with warehouse and internal audit teams. Establish and enforce policies on inventory write-offs, discounts, and provisions for slow-moving stock

Cash Flow & Treasury: Manage group cash flow and liquidity to ensure sufficient working capital for operational needs and future investments. Oversee treasury functions such as banking relationships, loan facilities, and optimal allocation of cash resources; implement strategies to optimize working capital and cash management.

Compliance & Risk Management: Ensure compliance with all financial regulations, accounting standards, and tax requirements across the group. Implement and enforce robust internal controls and financial policies to safeguard assets and maintain the integrity of financial data. Proactively identify financial and operational risks, and develop mitigation plans to manage those risks effectively.

ERP System Oversight: Oversee the integration and effective utilization of the company’s ERP system, which includes Point-of-Sale (POS) systems, Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), and accounting software. Work closely with IT and operations teams to ensure seamless data flow between systems, resolve any integration issues, and leverage the ERP to improve efficiency in financial reporting and inventory management.

Internal Controls & Audit: Establish and continuously improve internal control procedures within all finance-related processes (GL, AP, AR, inventory, etc.). Collaborate with the Internal Audit team to regularly review control effectiveness, address any audit findings or control gaps, and strengthen overall corporate governance. Ensure readiness for external audits and regulatory inspections, and lead the coordination of annual financial audits with external auditors.

• Team Leadership & Development: Lead and mentor the finance department staff, including the General Ledger Manager, Accounts Payable team, and Accounts Receivable team. Set clear objectives and performance expectations, provide coaching and professional development opportunities, and foster a culture of accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement within the finance team.

Strategic Planning & Advisory: Act as a key business partner to the CEO and executive team by providing financial insights and strategic recommendations. Participate in strategic planning initiatives, evaluating the financial impact of potential investments, expansion plans, or new business opportunities. Prepare presentations and reports for Board meetings, clearly communicating the financial performance, forecasts, and key financial metrics of the group.

Stakeholder Engagement: Liaise with external stakeholders such as auditors, banks, tax authorities, and regulatory bodies. Manage relationships with banks and financial institutions for financing, ensure timely compliance with tax filings and other statutory requirements, and represent the company’s financial interests in discussions with partners and suppliers when needed.

Required Skills and Experience

Leadership: Proven leadership and people management skills with the ability to inspire, lead, and build a high-performing finance team. Experience in managing and mentoring accounting/finance staff, with a track record of developing talent and fostering a collaborative team environment.

Financial Control & Consolidation: Strong background in financial control and accounting operations. Demonstrated expertise in multi-entity group consolidation and financial reporting, including experience consolidating financial statements for multiple subsidiaries or business units.

ERP & Systems Proficiency: Hands-on experience with ERP systems and financial software integrations. Familiarity with integrating front-end systems (such as POS and inventory/WMS) with accounting systems is highly desirable. Ability to leverage technology to streamline accounting processes and improve data accuracy.

Budgeting & Cash Management: Extensive experience in budgeting, financial planning, and analysis. Capable of creating detailed financial forecasts and managing cash flow for an organization of similar scale (e.g., ~RM100M turnover), with a strong grasp of working capital management and financial modeling.

Internal Controls & Compliance: Solid understanding of internal control frameworks and risk management practices. Proven track record of implementing and maintaining strong internal controls, and working with audit teams (internal or external) to ensure compliance and address any identified issues.

Strategic Thinking: Strategic mindset with the ability to see the big picture and align the finance function with the company’s long-term objectives. Capable of providing strategic financial insights, identifying opportunities for improvement or growth, and contributing to business strategy from a financial perspective.

Attention to Detail & Hands-On Approach: Meticulous attention to detail and a hands-on approach to problem-solving. Willingness to delve into details to ensure accuracy in financial records and reports, while also being able to step back and maintain oversight of the broader financial situation.

Communication & Stakeholder Management: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to clearly present complex financial information in a way that is understandable to non-financial stakeholders. Experience reporting to and interacting with senior executives and Boards, with the confidence to provide guidance and challenge assumptions when necessary.

Qualifications

• Education: Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field is required. A master’s degree in business, finance, or a related discipline (or an MBA) would be an added advantage.

• Professional Certification: CPA, ACCA, or an equivalent professional accounting qualification is mandatory. Active membership in a recognized accounting body and knowledge of current accounting standards are expected.

• Experience: A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in finance and accounting, with at least 5 years in a senior finance leadership role (such as Finance Manager, Financial Controller, or Head of Finance). Experience in the retail industry or a multi-branch business environment is a plus, especially managing the finances of a group of companies.

• Other: High proficiency in financial software and MS Excel. Familiarity with ERP systems used in retail or distribution (for example, systems integrating sales, inventory, and accounting data). Strong understanding of Malaysian financial regulations and tax laws (or ability to quickly get up to speed) given the company’s operating environment. A track record of driving improvements and implementing best practices in the finance function will be highly regarded.
