Job description

POSITION SUMMARY :

The Failure Analysis (FA) engineer supports the Failure Analysis Engineering function through product process review, enhancement, and development of analysis methods to monitor field quality data for accuracy and consistency.

The role involves performing engineering work in basic and applied research, development, design of new products, and sustaining existing products. Provides support to factories and design teams, offering useful feedback to resolve failures. Acts as a bridge between suppliers, design, and manufacturing.

RESPONSIBILITIES :

  1. Designs, modifies, and evaluates electronic components or circuitry for use in electronic equipment and devices.
  2. Creates, modifies, sustains, and maintains testing software; verifies and improves test coverage.
  3. Designs and modifies test fixtures to enhance product quality and reduce operation costs by early failure detection (CA/PA).
  4. Designs power supply circuits based on previous topologies to meet specific parameters, including loop stability, magnetic design, and worst-case component analysis.
  5. Understands new product release and engineering change procedures to support products during and after transition into manufacturing.
  6. Participates in yield improvement and continuous improvement actions.
  7. Supports product field failure analysis through simulation and evaluation; duplicates field failures and provides Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and RCCA.
  8. Supports customer field failure analysis; attends customer meetings, presents findings, and recommends preventative actions.
  9. Manages daily Failure Analysis Work In Progress (WIP) to ensure timely production fulfillment, including Top-Level Assembly (TLA) and In-Source Sub-Assembly.
  10. Leads a team of technicians, coordinating Failure Analysis outputs based on customer demands, and provides training to ensure competency.
  11. Establishes and maintains Failure Analysis data pools, develops/enhances Failure Analysis guidelines to improve productivity and accuracy, and drives yield improvements across departments.
  12. Communicates with Product Development and Engineering teams for resolution of unknown or critical failures promptly.
  13. Plays a key role in NPI and new derivative Part Number introductions; conducts failure analysis for technical issues and collaborates with relevant teams for resolution.
  14. Provides disposition of defective parts in MRB meetings, making engineering decisions regarding rework, RTV, or scrap supported by data.
  15. Acts as custodian for FA Non-Netting Inventory, ensuring inventory accuracy and performing periodic counts as needed.
  16. Adheres to organizational policies on quality management, safety, conduct, legal, environmental, and 5S policies.
  17. Performs other duties as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT :

  • Location: Penang Science Park, Simpang Ampat.
  • Works in a fast-paced engineering/manufacturing lab environment and standard office settings.
  • Operates electronic testing equipment, troubleshooting high-voltage power supplies, and conducting real-time measurements.
  • May require overtime during peak periods.

QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Proficient in electronic circuits, components, PCBs, and manufacturing processes troubleshooting.
  • Strong knowledge of materials' physical properties and failure modes.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to handle complex engineering tasks independently and manage multiple projects.
  • Leadership skills to guide junior engineers.
  • Engineering expertise in FMEA, DOE, and Reliability Engineering.
  • Experience in preparing CA/PA reports for internal/external customers.
  • Tools for troubleshooting, debugging, testing, and prototyping.

EXPERIENCE :

Essential :

  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant work experience, with at least 5 years in manufacturing technical engineering.

Desirable :

  • Electrical safety training and familiarity with plant operation systems.
  • Knowledge of 8D, FMEA, lean manufacturing, and electronic circuit troubleshooting.

EDUCATION :

Essential :

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electronics or related field.

Desirable :

  • Certification in 6-sigma or equivalent problem-solving methodologies.

OTHERS :

  • Willing to work in Penang Science Park, Simpang Ampat, Penang.
