Reporting to: Nurse Manager - Operating Room
Position Summary:
Provide professional nursing care within the assigned unit according to established standards and procedures.
Prepare operating room, materials and equipment for surgery.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for carrying out high standard of nursing care and treatment for patients undergoing surgeries.
- Receive and check patient pre-operatively according to the checklist.
- Prepare OR for surgical procedures.
- Ensure all equipment are in working condition.
- Assemble consumables and OR sets needed for daily procedures.
- Circulate and scrub for surgical procedure of all disciplines.
- Communicate with other nursing units on equipment needed for patient post-operatively.
- Assist in the management of OR.
- Maintain concise and complete documentation of operative records which is inclusive of swab and instrument count and anesthetic record.
- Monitor stock for consumables and drugs according to par level.
- Responsible for collection of surgical specimens and ensure correct labeling.
- Daily check of controlled drugs, crash cart and medical gases.
- Ensure all items and consumables used are recorded and charged.
- Ensure patient safety by taking preventive measures against accidents/incidents.
- Assist Anesthetist during administration of anesthesia.
- Participate in the "on-call" roster for emergencies.
- Check doctor's orders after surgery to ensure post operative treatment care is recorded.
- Update OR register at each case.
- Observe, take, record and report abnormal patient's condition/vital signs to the Surgeon/Anesthetist.
- Assist in the orientation of new staff.
- Participate in the training and development of nurses in OR.
- Perform any other duties as assigned or directed.
Education and Requirements:
RN with at least 2 years experience.
Post-basic in Peri-operative nursing preferred.
Valid annual practicing certificate.
Able to write and speak in English and Bahasa Malaysia.
Special Demands:
Analytical skills required to interpret changes in patients' medical conditions.
