Mechanical Design Engineer

Purpose of Role: This role is supporting all manufacturing design activity in Weir Minerals Malaysia (WMM) in terms of the new drawing creation & coordinate drawing changes. This role is also supporting the effort to enhance design capability in the WMM.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the HOD or Technical Manager in ensuring the T&PD drawing management is well maintained in a safe and well-kept manner in accordance with IP requirements.
  • Strong ability to develop 3-D models and 2-D drawings using NX & AutoCAD Software for multiple product lines.
  • Ensure that all drawings comply with WMM ISO9001 quality systems requirements.
  • Develop detailed design drawings and specifications for molded rubber products from customer drawings/sketches in accordance with established practices using CAD software.
  • Maintain a database of drawings and closely monitor the issuance of design-related drawings to suppliers & cross-functional teams.
  • Produce detailed manufacturing drawings for production use.
  • Assist the technical team in measuring molded components for critical new products.
  • Work closely with customers to finalize product tolerances in the drawing prior to tool fabrication.
  • Transform initial rough product designs or sketches into working models and documents for manufacturing purposes.
  • Assist the senior technical team in making necessary changes to existing models (3D) / drawings (2D).
  • Have a well-understood molded part tolerance standards & able to draft the requirements in the 2D drawings.
  • Able to recreate 3D & 2D files from hard copy part drawings for legacy items.

Job Knowledge/Education and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering (e.g., Mechanical).
  • Advanced degrees (Master's or Ph.D.) preferred.

Experience:

  • Several years of relevant engineering experience.
  • Proven track record in design engineering projects.

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks).
  • Strong understanding of engineering principles and design processes.
  • Experience with simulation and analysis tools (e.g., FEA, CFD).

Project Management:

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Experience in project planning, scheduling, and budgeting.

Problem-Solving:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve design issues.

Communication:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to present technical information clearly to non-technical stakeholders.

Teamwork:

  • Experience working in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Leadership skills and the ability to mentor junior engineers.

Innovation:

  • Ability to think creatively and propose innovative solutions.
  • Experience with research and development.
