Job description

Purpose of Job

The Senior Project Coordinator coordinates and facilitates project “Resilient livelihoods for indigenous Iban communities in Ulu Sungai Menyang (USM), Malaysia” in the WWF-Malaysia Sarawak Conservation Programme office in Sarawak. This project is co-developed by WWF-Malaysia, WWF-Germany and Ulu Ai Conservancy (UAC); and funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in Germany. This funding line is commonly referred to as BENGO. Hence this project will be referred to as the “BENGO-USM Project” throughout the rest of this document.

The position is responsible for technical reporting and carrying out of work packages, work outputs, work plan and budget spending as stipulated by the project document. The job entails the following: coordinating and overseeing the implementation of the BENGO-USM Project, including engaging with local communities in the project area; WWF-Germany and donors, the UAC team, government stakeholders and partners; external stakeholders and managing programme officers, short term contract staff and other personnel involved in the Project.

The work will be guided by the WWF Mission and Network policies, strategies set within the WWF-Malaysia Conservation Strategy, the Sarawak Conservation Programme (SCP) Strategy, WWF-Malaysia’s Environmental and Social Safeguards Framework (ESSF) and other WWF-Malaysia’s conservation strategies relevant to Sarawak. The work entails working closely with the local communities of USM and also liaising with the team at UAC to develop and promote active local involvement in sustainable livelihood options, their decision-making processes and conservation of natural habitat. In particular, the job aims to deliver the outcomes of the BENGO-USM Project.

Major Activities

  1. Coordinate, oversee and implement workplan as specified in the BENGO-USM Project work plan.
  2. Liaise with the external partners of the project, notably UAC joint implementation and monitoring of workplans and delivery of outputs. Engagements with stakeholders from the relevant government agencies, NGOs, other local community platforms are also expected as and when necessary.
  3. Organise and lead relevant consultations, workshops and dialogues, etc. with local communities, engaging the principles of FPIC. The tasks extend to providing assistance to our external partners.
  4. Liaise with other Managers of other programmes within WWF-Malaysia as this is a holistic, integrated project that cross-cuts multiple programmes.
  5. Contribute towards the monitoring, updating and preparation of progress and technical reports on work progress.
  6. To undertake any other assignments relevant to the overall objectives of the project and to participate wholeheartedly in the general activities of WWF-Malaysia, particularly events and activities that require the full support and participation of all staff, whether or not the focus of any particular event or activity has any bearing on the job description and assigned project objectives and activities upon permission obtained from your Supervisor.

Specifications

  1. At least 5 years’ experience in a related field; with a Bachelor’s Degree or Masters’ Degree and professional background in a field relevant to Conservation, Sustainable Development, Anthropology, Sociology, Conservation Sciences, or Forestry.
  2. Experience in leading, managing, and monitoring projects.
  3. Mature, able to work with minimal supervision, and has the capacity to manage a team, make decisions or act on issues with professionalism.
  4. Must be willing and available to spend time at a project site/other sites as required by the project work plans.
  5. Excellent written and oral skills in both English language and Bahasa Malaysia. Ability to communicate in a Sarawak native language (Iban) is an advantage.
  6. Must be computer literate and have the ability to use appropriate technology for presentation to partners, stakeholders and potential donors.
  7. Good interpersonal skills, innovative thinking, versatile ability to work in a team and work independently.
  8. Good understanding of current issues especially having knowledge on environmental and conservation issues.
  9. Having a valid driving license is preferred, as the job entails traveling to community areas, usually only accessible by road.

Salary Range

RM4,300 - RM5,500
