Applicants need to have comprehensive knowledge and understanding of English Law with sound knowledge and understanding of the Malaysian legal system and laws within the jurisdiction in any 2 or more of the following subject areas:

Commercial Law

Contract

Criminal Law

Equity & Trust

European Union Law

Evidence Law

International Law

Land/Property Law

Medical Law

Public Law

To teach, assess, and complete relevant administration work for law modules offered in the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) programme and other non-law programmes offered to undergraduate students and students in the foundation programme at the University of Reading Malaysia

The Post

The University of Reading Malaysia is seeking to appoint a permanent Lecturer to support the delivery of the law modules offered in the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) programme and other non-law programmes to students in the University’s campus at EduCity, Iskandar Puteri, Malaysia. Successful candidates in addition to satisfying the essential attributes should also demonstrate teaching experience in a core area of law, and the ability to carry out teaching and administrative duties to a high standard, commensurate with their stage of career while initiating and carrying out international quality research both individually and collaboratively, including working with industry. Successful applicants will be willing to teach topics both within and outside their major field of expertise, and able to contribute to the development of an exciting, innovative and engaging teaching environment.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

General

To develop and deliver high-quality teaching in the first instance, and research in due course

Teaching

Contribute to undergraduate courses by preparing and delivering lectures, tutorials, seminars, practical classes, etc, and through marking, providing feedback and project supervision.

Preparing, marking and moderating coursework and examinations, as required.

Show flexibility and be prepared to develop and teach material both within and outside their own immediate research interests.

Acting as a Personal Tutor, which involves monitoring the progress of Personal Tutees and providing them with academic and pastoral support.

Running consultation sessions to support students in their learning and understanding of the relevant module.

Assist with academic events.

Additional Duties

Undertaking administrative duties related to the support and teaching role including weekly attendance returns, maintaining student records, correspondence, writing references and liaison with the relevant bodies within the University.

Provide support to the Head of Section (Law) in professional accreditation and recognition of programmes and in the establishment and development of the new School of Law at UoRM.

Supporting UoRM Marketing and Recruitment with publicising and promoting UORM programmes at open days and student recruitment fairs.

Participate in staff meetings and committees, as required by the Head of Section.

Other projects as agreed with the Head of Section.

Others

The post-holder is expected to undertake any other duties that fall within the scope of the post as allocated by the line manager, following consultation with the post-holder.

Supervision Received

School of Law staff will receive general guidance from the Head of Section School of Law at University Reading Malaysia. Mentoring will be provided to advise and assist each appointment to meet the requirements of the post and progression in their career. Work is carried out according to deadlines agreed with the Head of Section with supervision on a day-to-day basis being minimal.

Supervision Given

The successful candidate will be expected to supervise and mentor undergraduate and, depending on previous experience, postgraduate research students.

Contact

The post holder will have regular contact with staff in Malaysia, Module Convenors and other academics in the UK as well as students, applicants, and visitors. Appointees will also be encouraged to develop intra and extra-institutional collaborations in support of research and student placement activities.

Terms and Conditions

This post is full-time and permanent. The terms and conditions will be standard terms and conditions for a Lecturer at the University of Reading Malaysia. The post is based in Iskandar Puteri, Johor, Malaysia.

QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE

CRITERIA

ATTAINMENT

A Bachelor of Law Degree and A Master’s Degree in Law

PhD in Law or closely related discipline

RELEVANT EXPERIENCE

Expertise in teaching the 12 substantive law subjects which include the 6 core subjects required to obtain a Qualifying Law Degree Programme.

Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of English Law with sound knowledge and understanding of the Malaysian legal system and laws within the jurisdiction.

Broad knowledge of law topics and willingness to teach outside of the primary area of expertise.

At least 3 years of teaching experience supported by evidence of good teaching skills

Experience of working at an advanced level within the higher education establishment or research environment

Experience of relevant Industry work

SKILLS REQUIRED

Ability to effectively engage in the teaching and learning of large and small groups of undergraduate students who are pursuing law modules from the various law and or non-law programmes

Ability to adapt integrated teaching materials and delivery style to suit the local context and according to the specific needs of the learners

Ability to teach students with varying levels of spoken/ written English language skills

Fluency in English, both written and spoken and strong oral and written communication skills, including presentation skills

Ability to work within the Law Management Team to develop materials for accreditation of programmes

Awareness of academic conventions and university life

Ability to inspire students with enthusiasm for the subject

Experience in delivering professional learning and/or workshops using online and/or blended technology to enhance learning and teaching

Experience of teaching or studying in a UK HE setting

Experience in teaching students of different nationalities or cultural groups

Experience in supervising undergraduate research projects

Experience of pastoral care of students
