Responsibilities
- Design and direct Micron Malaysia Employee Relations (ER) strategies to influence organizational culture to uphold our company values and in the areas of integrity, respect and fairness, where all team members feel safe and are engaged to bring their best selves to work. Develop partnerships with key stakeholders to support the success of our ER programs.
- Lead a team of ER professionals to pursue ER operations excellence through agile and efficient case management in accordance with our global investigation and consultation procedures and upholding quality of work standards. Drive expedient case resolutions, escalate as required, ensure appropriate and meaningful communication and that good documentation is in place. Develop proactive programs to address commonly recurring issues or to improve awareness and readiness.
- Guide and influence the course of action on sensitive employment activities to ensure success, compliance and alignment with global standards and processes. Lead the ER team to plan, implement and monitor these activities and provide appropriate aftercare where applicable.
- Provide ER expertise, consultation and marketplace insights regarding the labor environment in Malaysia, particularly in the states of Penang and Johor, including benchmarking industry best practices for human resources policies and practices, early warning systems for labor risks and non-compliance, and monitoring trends in labor standards, laws and government regulations for proactive action.
- Promote the People Organization and leadership team’s understanding of and compliance with local labor laws and international labor standards. Support and promote the adoption of Responsible Business Alliance (RBA) labor standards and compliance. Proactively identify, assess risk and impact, and implement actions in advance of any changes to the requirements, by partnering with People Organization counterparts, Legal and global partners. Support relevant labor audits or inspections and ensure any findings or opportunities are thoroughly addressed.
- Formulate strategy and lead labor union relations activities in the country. Keep abreast with local trends, industry issues, union activities and government priorities to mitigate risk to the company. Represent the company in labor disputes, arbitration and proceedings and/or provide vital support to our legal team.
- Influence, guide and support people leaders in fostering a positive workplace environment where there is respectful, lawful and professional relationship with and among team members. Provide scheduled training and coaching on ER topics such as harassment, discrimination and underperformance, or ad hoc on pertinent topics as and when the need emerges.
- Manage exit surveys and strategically conduct exit interviews. Review and analyze turnover data and information from exit interviews and relevant surveys to identify important trends and risk areas related to ER. Work with People Organization counterparts and business leaders to support of retention and engagement programs.
- Additional responsibilities will include people management and development, data analysis and reporting, corporate activities, crisis management and other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Permanent work location is in Batu Kawan, Penang, with flexibility to travel on short notice to other locations as needed including Muar, Johor and Putrajaya.
- Minimum 12 years of work experience relevant to Employee Relations, preferably in the manufacturing or technology sector.
- Minimum 6 years of leading a team of Employee Relations professionals.
- Good understanding, appreciation and application of Malaysian labor law and practices, as well as global labor standards. Familiarity with Asia region employment laws is advantageous, as are skills in the management of employment documents.
- Established connections with the labor and industrial relations department in Penang and/or Johor.
- Established ER community network and experience in industrial relations in Penang and/or Johor with good awareness and understanding of union-related matters. Proven track record to conduct effective negotiations with union representatives and develop positive relations.
- Attention to detail, strong sense of urgency, independent decision making, high standard of compliance and quality, and passionate about doing the right thing for the company and for our team members.
- Good influencer, strong interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills, with a good command of written and spoken English and Malay. Proficiency in other Asian languages is advantageous.
