Job Description:

The Discipline Senior Manager for Assurance & Continuous Improvement leads the Procurement Assurance discipline within Procurement Safety, Risk & Compliance, helping strengthen the effectiveness, consistency, and maturity of procurement governance, controls, and risk management across bp globally. The role is responsible for setting the assurance strategy, objectives, and metrics for the discipline, overseeing delivery of the assurance programme, and ensuring procurement assurance activities are embedded consistently across the organisation.

The role oversees the Procurement Improvement Cycle (PIC) process driving insight generation, thematic analysis, and continuous learning across the function. It also oversees the supplier commercial audit programme and supports the scale-up of AI-enabled invoice validation capabilities, including development of the long-term strategy and vision for how commercial assurance will evolve in an increasingly AI-enabled control environment.

This headcount will work closely with Procurement Leadership, business teams, Policy & Governance, Ethics & Compliance, Internal Audit, Safety, Risk and other internal and external partners to shape and deliver assurance priorities aligned to procurement transformation and bp strategic objectives. The role also represents procurement assurance across relevant internal and external forums, bringing in industry best practices and driving organisational learning.

Key Responsibilities
  • Define and deliver the Procurement Assurance strategy, objectives, and metrics aligned to broader procurement and bp priorities, strengthening governance maturity, control effectiveness, and risk management across procurement globally.

  • Deliver a risk-based assurance programme that provides leadership with clear insight on procurement control effectiveness, systemic risks, emerging themes, and assurance outcomes.

  • Strengthen procurement control environments by driving closure of assurance actions, improving conformance, and embedding sustainable governance and continuous improvement outcomes.

  • Oversee the Procurement Improvement Cycle (PIC) process, ensuring concerns, themes, root causes, and learnings are translated into actionable insights and measurable improvements across the function.

  • Deliver an effective supplier commercial audit programme that strengthens supplier governance, commercial discipline, and mitigation of value leakage risks.

  • Lead the scale-up of AI-enabled invoice validation capabilities and develop the long-term strategy and operating vision for commercial assurance within an increasingly AI-enabled control environment.

  • Support investigations, reviews, and high-risk procurement concerns by providing assurance expertise, independent insight, root cause analysis, and identification of systemic improvement opportunities.

  • Lead the High Value Learning programme across Procurement, ensuring lessons learned, themes, and best practices are captured, shared, and embedded to strengthen organisational learning and prevention.

  • Bring external insights, industry best practices, innovation, and digital capabilities into the assurance discipline to continuously improve assurance methodologies, tools, and organisational learning.

  • Build and lead a high-performing Assurance team with strong technical capability, fostering collaboration, psychological safety, continuous learning, innovation, and accountability.

  • Strengthen alignment and integration across Procurement, Policy & Governance, Ethics & Compliance, Internal Audit, Safety, Risk and business teams to ensure coordinated and effective assurance activities.

  • Represent Procurement Assurance across internal and external forums, strengthening bp’s reputation for disciplined, transparent, and insight-led procurement assurance and governance practices.

Key Requirements
  • Degree educated or equivalent relevant professional experience preferred.

  • Professional qualification related to procurement, audit, governance, risk, or compliance desirable.

  • Strong understanding of procurement assurance, governance, controls, risk management, and procurement processes within complex organisations.

  • Experience leading assurance programmes, commercial audits, governance initiatives, and continuous improvement activities.

  • Knowledge of supplier governance, value leakage risks, invoice validation controls, and AI/digital assurance capabilities.

  • Understanding of Ethics & Compliance, ABC/AML, trade sanctions, and third-party risk requirements.

  • Ability to act as an SME and influence senior stakeholders internally and externally.

  • Experience operating across complex multinational stakeholder environments and leading transformation initiatives.

  • Strong leadership, stakeholder engagement, influencing, and change management capability.

  • Proven ability to improve governance maturity, control effectiveness, and organisational learning.

  • Strong commitment to bp’s Code of Conduct, OMS, and safety leadership principles.

  • Strong analytical, strategic thinking, and risk-based decision-making capability.

  • Ability to identify systemic themes, develop pragmatic solutions, and drive continuous improvement.

  • Strong communication, collaboration, and storytelling skills across diverse stakeholder groups.
