Job summary

S&P Global Malaysia is seeking a Data Stewardship Expert for Upstream Operations to manage data quality, lineage and governance across wells, production, drilling and related datasets.

You will perform data validation, reconciliation, metadata upkeep, and coordinate with EDO Data Operations to ensure timely ingestion and delivery to analytics platforms. Strong SQL, Python and Excel skills are essential, with experience in BI tools.

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of relevant experience in data stewardship, data operations, analytics, or related roles.
  • Experience working with upstream oil and gas datasets such as wells, production, drilling activity, rig data, or offset well analysis strongly preferred.
  • Strong SQL for data validation, reconciliation, and investigation of upstream data issues, with Python, VS Code, and Power BI
  • Proficiency in Excel for data reconciliation and trend analysis.

  • Support Product and Technology teams by validating data changes, participating in UAT, and assisting with defect investigation and resolution.
  • Respond to upstream data inquiries from internal stakeholders and customers in coordination with Client Services and Operations teams.
  • Maintain and update stewardship documentation, including data definitions, business rules, lineage artifacts, and process documentation.
  • Identify opportunities for automation, standardization, and AI-enabled enhancements to upstream data stewardship workflows.

Data Stewardship Expert – Upstream Operations

Execute data stewardship activities for well header, borehole, completion, production, rig activity, and offset drilling datasets in accordance with enterprise data governance standards.

Perform data validation, reconciliation, and consistency checks across upstream datasets.

Maintain end-to-end data lineage and metadata for upstream data flows, ensuring traceability across source systems, processing layers, and downstream products.

Coordinate with EDO Data Operations to support ingestion, transformation, and delivery of upstream datasets to analytical platforms and customer-facing products.

Conduct vendor and third-party data quality reviews related to wells, production, rig activity, and drilling programs; identify data issues and elevate exceptions as needed.

Support Product and Technology teams by validating data changes, participating in User Acceptance Testing (UAT), and assisting with defect investigation and resolution.

Respond to upstream data inquiries from internal stakeholders and customers in coordination with Client Services and Operations teams.

Maintain and update stewardship documentation, including data definitions, business rules, lineage artifacts, and process documentation.

Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by identifying opportunities for automation, standardization, and AI-enabled enhancements to upstream data stewardship workflows.

Required qualifications and experience:

4+ years of relevant experience in data stewardship, data operations, analytics, or related roles.

Experience working with upstream oil and gas datasets such as wells, production, drilling activity, rig data, or offset well analysis strongly preferred.

Required skills:

Proficiency in SQL for data validation, reconciliation, and investigation of upstream data issues with additional skills in Python, VS Code, and Power BI.

Advanced Excel skills for production volume reconciliation, drilling activity checks, and trend analysis.

Experience working with large, complex data sets, with the ability to efficiently process, reconcile, and analyse data from multiple upstream data sources.

Working knowledge of relational databases and upstream data models, including wells, production, rig activity, and drilling workflows. Competent in working with large datasets, identifying anomalies, and resolving discrepancies to ensure reliable outputs.

Understanding of upstream data concepts such as well lifecycle states, spud-to-completion workflows, production allocation, and offset drilling relationships.

Foundational familiarity with BI or reporting tools to review upstream outputs and identify anomalies.

Strong understanding of data governance, stewardship responsibilities, and data quality control practices.

Excellent attention to detail, analytical problem-solving ability, and capability to perform root-cause analysis of data issues.

Effective communicator with the ability to collaborate across Operations, Technology, Product, and Vendor teams.
