Job Purpose and Impact

  • The Customs Advisory, Senior Supervisor job sets goals and objectives for the achievement of customs regulatory and advisory activities in the Southeast Asia. This job oversees the development, implementation and maintenance of complex customs solutions and processes, with focus on process improvement while adhering to import and export customs regulations, supervises legal disputes and audits and analyses data to deliver required insights on trade matters. This job monitors the operations of the team, specifically in Malaysia and Indonesia and others as designated, to support the development of customs compliance policies and oversees customs issues and regulations.
Key Accountabilities
  • POLICY & PROCEDURE DEVELOPMENT: Monitors the development, implementation and maintenance of customs solutions, planning, compliance policies and procedures to adhere to applicable laws and regulations. Advise on the development of processes and data requirements for customs/financial/compliance related systems.
  • EXPERT ADVISING: Uses technical knowledge to provide insights to key partners to ensure compliance with customs regulations and trade policies to mitigate impacts to the organization, and supports recommendations on local and regional technical and regulatory interpretations including classifications, country of origin determinations and regulated product flows.
  • CUSTOMS STRATEGIES: Partners with global and regional collaborators and other business leaders to support development, implementation and optimization of global customs strategies and ensures requirements are met.
  • AUDITS & INVESTIGATIONS: Monitors and supports the resolution of customs related issues, including customs audits, investigations and disputes.
  • METRICS ANALYSIS: Reviews data and analyzes customs compliance metrics to identify compliant customs data.
  • RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT: Develops effective relationships with legal counsel and customs authorities to stay informed of regulatory updates and standard methodologies to deliver high quality service in support of the reputation for adherence to import and export customs regulations.
  • COMPLIANCE TRAINING: Coaches and implements training programs aimed at educating the team and partners on customs compliance requirements and standard methodologies.
  • TEAM MANAGEMENT: Manages team members to achieve the organization's goals, by ensuring productivity, communicating performance expectations, creating goal alignment, giving and seeking feedback, providing coaching, measuring progress and holding people accountable, supporting employee development, recognizing achievement and lessons learned, and developing enabling conditions for talent to thrive in an inclusive team culture.
Qualifications

Minimum & Typical years of work experience

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum requirement of 7 years of professional customs compliance experience.
  • Experience with a Big 4 accounting firm or major law firm and/or multinational company's customs compliance function.
  • Experience in implementation of internal controls, risk assessments and management of internal and external audits.
  • Demonstrated experience and good knowledge relating to Malaysia and Indonesia Customs regulations and application including good knowledge of legal framework related to customs valuation, free trade agreement (FTA) origin and customs law.
