Purpose
The Assistant Manager will head the Careers and Alumni Office and oversee the strategic development of student employability, industry engagement and alumni relations at UoRM. The post-holder will be responsible for supervising the Careers Officer, developing industry networks, coordinating alumni activities and ensuring the smooth delivery of high-quality careers and graduate employability services aligned with UoRM’s values and goals.
Team Structure
The post holder reports to the Director of SWAS and line manages the Careers & Student Development Officer. Works closely with the SWAS team, academic departments, industry partners and alumni.
Main duties and responsibilities
to lead and manage the planning and delivery of careers-related activities for students;
to supervise the Careers & Student Development Officer and ensure high-quality career support services;
to develop and implement the Careers and Employability Strategy in alignment with university priorities;
to engage with industry partners to establish internship and graduate employment opportunities for students;
to coordinate and deliver employability workshops, mock interviews and CV clinics and some may also involve collaboration with academic staff;
to organise and oversee campus career fairs and employer networking events regularly;
to collaborate with Internship/Placement Providers to monitor and enhance student work-readiness;
to track student career outcomes and prepare career statistics, reports and MQA-compliant documentation;
to represent the Careers Office in relevant meetings and events internally and externally
b) Alumni Engagement Responsibilities
to head the development and operations of the Alumni Unit at UoRM;
to establish and maintain a regularly updated database of alumni contact details and profiles;
to initiate and strengthen relationships with alumni for career mentoring, guest talks, and industry linkage;
to plan and implement alumni-focused events, including networking receptions, reunions, and online engagement campaigns;
to promote alumni involvement in UoRM events, academic development, and fundraising efforts where applicable;
to prepare alumni reports and maintain records for internal and MQA review;
to support alumni participation in Welcome Week, Graduation, and other key University events;
Would be required to attend any other meeting to represent SWAS as directed by the Director of SWAS.
The post-holder is also expected to attend meetings on behalf of SWAS as required by the Director and to undertake other duties relevant to the role.
c) Other
• The post holder is expected to undertake any other duties that fall within the scope of the post as allocated by the line manager, following consultation with the post-holder.

Qualifications and Experience
CRITERIA
Attainment
Essential
Degree level qualification with relevant work-related experience, or an equivalent combination of education/training and experience.
Skills Required
Essential
Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills.
Desirable
Ability to use data tools (e.g., Excel) for tracking outcomes.
Knowledge
Essential
Understanding of career services and alumni engagement strategies.
Desirable
Familiarity with Malaysian education policy and graduate employability frameworks.
Essential
Experience in student development, industry liaison, or alumni relations.
Other
Essential
Excellent English and Bahasa Melayu written and oral communication skills and the ability to deal with employee and clients at all levels with tact and discretion.
Desirable
Understanding of intercultural communication and working in a multicultural environment.
Supervision received
The Assistant Manager reports to the Director of SWAS. The post-holder will work closely with the SWAS team, academic departments, industry partners, and alumni bodies. They are expected to work independently, exercising good judgement and confidentiality at all times.
Supervision given
Responsible for supervising the Careers & Student Development Officer, including providing strategic direction and day-to-day support.
Contact
The post holder will have frequent contact with staff in Malaysia and the UK, students, employers, alumni, and visitors. The post requires excellent interpersonal skills and representation of UoRM at internal and external events.
Terms and conditions
This post is full-time and permanent. The probationary period is six months. The post is based at University's Educity campus, Iskandar Puteri, Johor. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required for events and engagements.
