Job description

Educational Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Engineering, Civil

Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.

Some positions may accept equivalent experience in lieu of a formal degree, especially

with substantial hands-on safety engineering experience in construction.

Certifications:

OSHA Certifications:

o OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety and Health certification (generally

required).

o OSHA 500 Trainer Course for the Construction Industry (if the individual is

to train others).

Certified Safety Professional (CSP): This is an advanced certification from the Board of

Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP), demonstrating expertise in safety engineering.

Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST): A certification for professionals

who focus on safety in the construction industry.

NEBOSH (National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health):

o NEBOSH International General Certificate or NEBOSH Construction

Certificate.

First Aid & CPR: Required for immediate emergency response.

Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH): For those who will be dealing with environmental

health aspects of construction safety, such as air quality or exposure to hazardous

materials.

Work Experience:

3-5 years of relevant experience working in construction safety or as a safety engineer,

often with hands-on experience on active job sites.

Experience in risk management, hazard identification, and the implementation of safety

systems.

Working knowledge of construction site operations and the various safety challenges

(e.g., heavy machinery, fall protection, electrical hazards, etc.).

Experience with safety audits and inspections on construction projects.

Key Skills:

Risk Assessment and Management: Ability to identify potential hazards, assess risks,

and create strategies to minimize those risks.

Safety Compliance: Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations (e.g., OSHA

standards) and the ability to ensure compliance across the project.

Technical Safety Engineering: Ability to apply engineering principles to design safer

construction processes, tools, and equipment.

Safety Training: Experience in developing and delivering safety training programs for

workers and supervisors.

Incident Investigation and Reporting: Investigating accidents, identifying root causes,

and recommending corrective actions.

Safety Equipment Knowledge: Understanding of personal protective equipment (PPE),

safety systems (e.g., fall protection, ventilation), and emergency response protocols.

Project Management: Coordination with project managers to ensure safety

considerations are integrated into every phase of the project.

Skills

Attention to Detail: Safety engineers must identify even the smallest hazards that could

lead to accidents.

Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze safety data, incident reports, and risk assessments.

Communication Skills: Capable of communicating safety standards and procedures

clearly to workers, contractors, and management.

Leadership: Ability to take charge of safety operations and motivate others to follow

safety guidelines strictly.

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety or related fields for more senior

positions.

Knowledge of Safety Management Systems (SMS) such as ISO 45001.

Proficiency in using safety management software for risk tracking, documentation, and

reporting.
