Overview

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is an international nonprofit environmental organization with more than 3 million members and online supporters. Since 1970, our lawyers, scientists, and other environmental specialists have worked to protect the world's natural resources, public health, and the environment. For over two decades, the NRDC has worked in China as a thought leader and trusted adviser to our partners. With a highly effective team of more than 40 members based in our Beijing office, we have worked hard at both the national and local levels to recommend, develop, and support the implementation of innovative laws, policies, technologies, and market tools that curb pollution and accelerate China’s transition to a clean, low-carbon economy. NRDC's Beijing Representative Office is registered under the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau and supervised by the National Forestry and Grassland Administration of China in accordance with applicable laws.

NRDC is seeking a Communications Manager to work with the Communications Team in our Beijing office.

Position Summary

NRDC is seeking a Communications Manager in our Beijing Office. The Communications Manager will be responsible for providing effective communications support to the Energy Transition team, from strategy development to implementation.

Responsibilities
  • In collaboration with the Energy Transition team, develop and implement a comprehensive communications strategy to elevate NRDC’s visibility and advocacy impact by using various communications channels to reach multiple influential audiences with compelling messages drawn from our work.
  • Organize press events and stakeholder engagement workshops and meetings to disseminate NRDC research findings and promote discourse.
  • Build a network of media channels, develop appropriate media content according to different channels’ target audiences, and analyze coverage for better pitching in the future.
  • Develop communications materials for the project team, including but not limited to press releases, factsheets, newsletters, WeChat posts, and website content.
  • Provide suggestions/talking points and help with coordination of interviews and provide editorial support to blogs and other communications materials.
  • Provide publication review support, including but not limited to fact-checking, structural editing, and copy editing.
  • Coordinate with other organizations working on similar issues to identify opportunities for messaging alignment and amplification.
  • Perform other assignments to support NRDC’s overall communications objectives as needed.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 5 years of full-time work experience in the communications field, preferably related to energy or environmental policy.
  • Master’s degree in communications, public policy, international development, or a related field (or bachelor's degree with 7 additional years of relevant experience).
  • Excellent communication, research, and writing skills in both Chinese and English. Ability to communicate clearly and consistently with a variety of technical and non-technical audiences.
  • A thorough understanding of the communications landscape at home and abroad.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with media and stakeholders, including policymakers, industry, and NGOs.
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, highly motivated, proactive work style, detail-oriented, accountable, and with excellent organizing skills.
