Assistant Wellsite Leader
I. General
Assists the Wellsite Leader in supervising well programs to a level determined by the Wellsite Leader. Builds on training and on-the-job exposure while developing skills related to becoming a wellsite Leader.
II. Relationship
- Reports to the Wellsite Leader.
- May be required to mentor wellsite engineers.
- Interacts with client wellsite representatives, drilling contractor supervisors, and service company representatives.
III. Responsibilities
QHSE
- The WSL shall demonstrate leadership in all aspects of health, safety, and environmental (HSE) protection, ensuring safe working practices are utilized.
- The ultimate objective of the AWSL is to conduct well operations safely, in accordance with the approved well operations program, complying with policies, standards, procedures, and regulatory requirements, within the allocated time and budget, with optimal resource use.
- Follow roles and responsibilities outlined in the Standing Orders for Wellsite Leaders as assigned by the WSL.
Planning and Coordination
- Organizes and leads pre-job safety and operations meetings related to well operations.
- Leads daily planning meetings and discusses operations with toolpusher, segment, and third-party supervisors.
- Attends daily planning calls with supervisors from relevant parties.
- Maintains a look-ahead planner to anticipate resource requirements and ensure operational efficiency, including contingency planning.
- Checks that equipment and services meet contractual requirements.
- Manages inventory of tangible items such as cement, barite, bits, and rental equipment.
- Ensures equipment readiness through QA/QC checks.
- Ensures timely material requests to prevent operational disruptions.
Operations
- Ensures operations are conducted safely, preventing well control issues, stuck pipe, and other hazards.
- Issues standing instructions for drillers for each shift, routed through the toolpusher/rig manager.
- Follows SOPs and completes checklists as required.
- Prepares detailed procedures for critical operations like casing running and cementing.
- Performs wellsite calculations, e.g., for cement jobs.
- Prepares for well control events with appropriate readiness measures.
- Prepares for stuck pipe events with appropriate procedures and equipment.
- Supervises critical activities on the rig floor, such as casing landing, cementing, testing, and tripping.
- Participates in performance discussions to improve operational efficiency.
- Implements contingency plans as needed.
- Prepares standard equipment lists and daily cost estimates timely.
Communications
- Prepares and communicates daily reports with contributions from relevant service companies for approval and distribution.
- Prepares reports on casing, cementing, etc., as required.
- Prepares daily cost estimates for approval.
- Discusses material requests daily with logistics.
- Documents failures or incidents within 24 hours.
- Participates in program changes and suggests improvements.
- Initiates Management of Change (MOC) processes where required.
- Ensures proper handover to relief personnel.
Training & Development
- Mentors junior staff at the wellsite.
- Assesses rig crew readiness for well control events through regular drills.
- Conducts other relevant drills, e.g., emergency response.
IV. Competencies and Behavior
The Assistant Wellsite Leader should have relevant experience, typically at least 5 years of seniority in oilfield drilling positions.
