Job Title - Wintel Patching Lead (SCCM & Azure Update Manager) Experience - 10+ Years
Role Summary
The Wintel Patching Lead will be responsible for end-to-end Windows Server patching, vulnerability remediation, and reboot governance across enterprise environments. The role requires deep hands-on expertise in SCCM, WSUS, and Azure Update Manager, along with strong architectural understanding to prevent unplanned outages, especially those caused by .NET cumulative updates and reboot orchestration. This role also provides technical leadership and oversight to Wintel operations teams and acts as the final authority for patching standards, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Patching & Update ManagementOwn and govern Windows Server patching strategy across on-prem and Azure environments.Lead patching operations using SCCM, WSUS, and Azure Update Manager.Design and enforce reboot-safe patching workflows, especially for .NET cumulative and Windows OS updates.Ensure patching aligns with approved maintenance windows and change management standards.Eliminate unexpected / auto-reboots triggered by patching activities.
- Vulnerability ManagementDrive Windows vulnerability remediation in alignment with security and compliance requirements.Partner with Security teams on vulnerability prioritization and remediation timelines.Ensure accurate reporting of patched, pending-reboot, and exception-based systems.
- Architecture & GovernanceAct as Wintel Architect / SME for patching, update orchestration, and reboot control.Define standardized GPOs, SCCM policies, and AUM configurations.Review and optimize patching architecture to avoid tool overlap and conflicts.Support audits (SOX, ISO, internal audits) with clear evidence and documentation.
- Operational LeadershipProvide oversight and guidance to Wintel patching and L2/L3 support teams.Lead RCA for patch-related incidents and recurring reboot issues.Support critical incident scenarios (weekends / off-hours), including advisory decisions.Drive automation and continuous improvement in patching processes.
- Stakeholder ManagementEngage with Infra leadership, Security, Application teams, and Site IT.Communicate risks, dependencies, and patching outcomes clearly to management.Provide inputs for MBRs, executive summaries, and risk assessments.
Technical Skills (Must Have)
- Windows Server: 2012 R2 / 2016 / 2019 / 2022/2025
- SCCM / MECM (Software Updates, ADRs, Client Settings, Maintenance Windows)
- WSUS architecture and integration
- Azure Update Manager (Maintenance Configurations, Guest Patching)
- Windows Update GPOs and reboot management
- .NET Framework & .NET cumulative update behavior
- PowerShell scripting (patch validation, reporting, reboot detection)
- Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS basics
